  • Glaze on wax on glaze on wax?

Mike, just finished watching your DVD. That Vette looked great when you were done. Glad you showed the entire job, was very useful to see your techniques for getting in between scoop fins, avoiding peaks, getting tight rounded convex and concave surfaces.

    One thing raised a question:

You put #7 on after the NXT. I wondered about that, and you made the comment in the video that normally one finishes with NXT. So, can one put glaze and NXT on top of one another without concern? Would it be a good idea to use #7 every time I wax? Before or after NXT?

    Thanks,
    Jim

I'm not trying to replace Mike's answer, but rather supplement...

The idea of putting a glaze on last is to add an extra level of shine and gloss, but it is something typically only done for photos or car shows etc. A glaze will not last long at all when exposed, so for the average person you would want to put your glaze directly on the paint, and THEN follow with your NXT.

Given it is Chistmas Eve, it might be a day or a few before Mike chimes in...

The #7 was put on top merely to show the proper way to use a pure polish. Much like the ScratchX segment earlier, and the spray wax segment, many people dont use it properly and cause themselves a hassle.

For a regular detail, you certainly can use #7 as your pure polish before Nxt if you wanted, but you definately want the wax on top.

        This is correct.

It was NOT a part of the detail job. I was simply that we had some more daylight and some more film so we showed the technique for applying #7 because we had the perfect condition finish for applying a pure polish.

In most cases you apply a pure polish to a finish in excellent condition, that is clean and smooth, (not waxed). After we buffed out the paint it was in perfect condition.

In hindsight it was a mistake to add the bonus footage showing the technique because it confuses everyone into thinking you apply #7 after waxing and that wasn't the idea.

The idea was while we were there, because we had the right condition paint to apply a pure polish, because we still had daylight, because we still had film, because we know a lot of people don't know the right technique.... for all these reasons we shot the technque and included it at the end of the video.

Technically, after we applied and removed the NXT Tech Wax we were done. In the real world we would have packed up our tools and products, collected our pay and drove home.

OK, I understand, in fact when you did the job by hand it was ScratchX-#7-NXT, so that should have answered my question.

Just a clarification, is #7 is a polish (ie. aggressive)?

The answer to this question may be found in this recent thread:

Also, you might want to do a google search specific to this site. Search for "pure polish," and you will find a number of helpful threads discussing the differences between a "pure polish" and a "cleaner/polish":
