  • Going to use G110 first time, what to read up on?

I'm going to be getting and using my G110 for the first time in the coming days.

However, are there any sources I should read-up on, to try to have good technique, etc?

Also, is M80 too harsh on a paint that doesn't have much wrong with it? I also read it doesn't always work good on some paints. Does anyone know if it works ok on new Mercedes-Benz paints?

Would M205 be better? It's about the same thing as m80?

    Thanks for any advice.

Here are some links that could help start

How to use the G-100 to remove swirls
Recommended Products - G100a Dual Action Polisher
How to apply product to the face of your foam buffing pads
Tips & Techniques for using the G110, G100, G220 and the PC Dual Action Polisher

M80 should work out fine, it would remove some defects that the paint might have and give back oils that will enhance your paints condition and appearance, good luck and have fun

Thanks. Now I guess I'm just wondering if 80 is still what I should use, since M205 is out?

Aren't they about equal aggressiveness and M205 would be the newest choice?

Dont know that, though people really seem to like how #205 looks.

The DVD will show #80, as it was a couple years ago. Hopefully some more folks will be able to start putting up threads about how to use #205 vs. #80.

Thanks. I think I'll start with 205, and then go to 80 & 83 if needed.

I've always liked the 80 series (what I learned on ) but the new products that came out may be the ticket too!

The best thing is, is to evaluate your paint and do test spots and use the least aggressive product. Do more than one pass when using a product and be patient if it doesn't do it in one pass. There is no miracle in a bottle product, although, I think Meguiar's is coming to that point

Read the above links and search for threads on the new products to see how people are doing with them.

and I also have to wonder real quick:

If Scratch X 2.0 and/or Swirl X (to be released next month) are either one of those close to M205, if not are they more or less aggressive? and is the new "ultimate compound" pretty much M105? I ask because these products come in easier to handle containers, and I wouldn't spill them as much, etc. haha

M80 has worked great on all the Mercedes-Benz I've worked on personally and also on all the Mercedes-Benz cars that have been to our Saturday and Thursday classes and that's a lot of cars...

Aggressiveness Order for New Consumer Products - This will surprise you!

Most aggressive to least aggressive -->

That would be from most to least aggressive,
                      • Ultimate Compound
                      • ScratchX 2.0
                      • SwirlX
                      • M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish
                      • M205 Ultra Finishing Polish
                      • ScratchX (Current Version being discontinued)

M80 is quite a bit more aggressive than the current version of ScratchX and a few ticks less aggressive than M83

It's hard to say if M80 is going to be more aggressive or less aggressive on different paint system compared to M205 because they are very different products but they are in the same ballpark.

Keep in mind that M205 was designed first and foremost to be a companion product and a follow-up or second step product for use after M105 Ultra Cut Compound.

So for following M105 with a rotary buffer M205 would be the best choice; when using a DA Polisher to remove swirls and scratches from normal wear-and-tear from washing and drying where you'll have greater range of depths in the defects then in most cases M80 is going to work better.

The best option would be to have a quart of each on hand as that way you'll be able to test each product to see which one works best for each paint system you're working on. Of course if you only have one car and only plan on working on only your car then having just one that works best would be the best solution but the problem with this is often times you just don't know what's going to work best until you do some testing.

From my limited experience with M205 with a DA Polisher I would want to make it my first choice of products because of it's ease of use and awesome results on any paint system, but M80 is a time-proven capable cleaner/polish.

Tough choice and hard to say without testing...

No. Same type or category of product in that they are both very aggressive but M105 is formulated first and foremost for people using rotary buffers on fresh paint, typically in body shops. Yes it can be used with a DA Polisher and by Hand but primary focus of formulation is for the Professional working in a body shop on fresh paint.

Ultimate compound is formulated primarily for enthusiasts working either by hand or with a DA Polisher on cured or hardened paint.

So pick your poison according to which category of user best describes what you do.

You might want to pick up some of the smaller squeeze bottles to pour the product into as well.

                            Mike

Great information. Sounds like those new consumer products are really going to work great, with some real capability, based on their aggressiveness.

Sounds like I should get 80 in addition to 205, since you have seen yourself 80 works good on Mercedes paint. Then I can see myself if 205 is good too.

Fantastic information. Sounds like I might wait on Ultimate compound instead of M105, since it is good for DA too.

I did have one more quick question Mike or someone else.

M205 or something similar at least in reason to use, like 80. Would this be something I could use every couple months, when doing a detail on my car? Or is something like M205 a step you don't do, if paint is still in good shape with no visual defects?
