  • Topping LSP with pure polish

    Hello all,

Haven't detailed my car for sometime, just for the fun of it, I am going to top the LSP with a pure polish such as M05 when I am back in S. Ca. for Christmas.

    My plan is:

    1. wash - GC/DC

    2. Clean - DC02 or MPPC

    3. Polish - M05 or M09 or M83

    4. LSP - MPPP or M20 or M26 or Tech Wax 1.0

    5. Polish - M05

    Here are the questions:

    1. How does it affect the LSP when topping w/ a pure polish and what's the humidity range for M05?

    2. What's the best combo?

    Your comments are appreciated.

You can top with a pure polish but understand that its not going to last this is where the wax comes in.

I would skip the pure polish after the LSP unless you want a temporary boost in shine on your vehicle... Apply your final wax and stop there. Using any of the waxes you have listed will give you a great looking finish and no need for a polish after.

Might be best to get a little more info from you so.... As far as product combo - what are you trying to do? Remove swirls and scratches, just make your paint shine or somewhere in-between?

      Agreed with Brandon.

You might could even skip the second step...M83 has cleaned my car off pretty well in the past. Wash > M83 > M05 > M20 seems like it would give you a good shine with less overall work.

Just to note, DC2 is not a cleaner, it is a pure polish. Perhaps you meant DC1?

Also, #83 and #9 are cleaner polishes, not pure polishes.

Do you have any of the products already, or planning to go shopping?

Searching through the archives I haven't found any specific humidity ranges for #5, but I did find this very interesting thread of Meguiar's pure polishes, which includes a helpful discussion of #5:

Reads like there's some confusion over a cleaner/polish and a pure polish as you list M05 a pure polish with M09 and M83. M83 is actually more aggressive then Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner or the MPPC you listed in your cleaning step. Using M83 after any of these other products would be working backwards.

Here would be the correct recipe with the products you listed...

            Wash
Clean - M83 or the least of these that get the job done, M09, MPPC, DCPC

"Use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

Polish M07 or M81, or even M09 or M03, M05 dries fast and dries white and some people get confused to use it because the name says,

            "New Car Glaze"

That name was coined when the product first came out I think in the 1930's, 1940's and/or 1950's

            After that apply your wax.

Question: What are you working on?

Re: Topping LSP with pure polish

              Thank you all.

I clayed and had two coats of M16 on the car last week or so and luckily it's still in very good shape with minimum swirls. So here's my new plan:

              1. Wash - GC
              2. cleaner/polish - M09
              3. Polish - M05
              4. Wax - M20

              Then:

              Since I read this one:

So for the fun of it, I am going to top the LSP w/ M05 (still have 2 bottles) to see how it looks.

              - It will give a temporary boost in shine or wetness, but for how long?
              - After the boost, do I have to rewax?
              - Examples of combos : M26 with M05 on top, or M20 w/ M05 on top etc...
              - What's the best humidity ranges for using M05?

              Thanks again.

P.S. I have all the "toys" and ready to go.

Re: Topping LSP with pure polish

In most cases you don't top a wax with a polish and if you do, you don't use a polish that dries white which is what M05 does. Just to note, Meguiar's doesn't recommend applying a pure polish or a cleaner/polish over a coating of wax.

So if you want to top a wax with a polish then most people would use M03, M07 or M81 with M07 on the top of the list as it dries clear and contains the richest content of polishing oils.

Re: Topping LSP with pure polish

Thank you Mike and everyone for your help.

So, I am going to top the LSP w/ M07 (still have 1/2 bottle) on the trunk, just for the fun of it and something new. Then rewax, after the boost gone, just to be safe.
