I recently got my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited painted and I was wondering how long I should wait before applying a wax and what type of wax should I use?

You should follow the instructions from your painter. Generally with today’s paint technology you will want to wait a minimum of 30 days.
You are able to use some of the body shop safe polishes like #7 Show Car Glaze or #81 Hand Polish if you would like add some gloss without worry while waiting for the paint to cure.
When you are ready to add a protectant I would recommend the NXT Tech Wax. It came out earlier this year and is very popular.
