  • Do I need to repaint?

Ok this is my first post here.

I have 'stains' on my paint that I just can't seem to get off. I think I know how it got there so I will explain first the history of the car and my efforts.

I bought the car used two years ago. As I was cleaning out the trunk, I found a lot of paint balls. The paint on the car was fairly oxidized so I began cleaning everything up. When I was finished, I had a nice great shine. Unfortunately, in certain areas of the car (roof, trunk, etc) I see paint splatters as if someone took a paint ball gun and shot the car. below the splatter are vertical lines that looks like the paint drizzled down.

I began by claying a section of the car to see if the clay bar may help reduce it. It didn't. I then tried to use some polishing compound to see if i can get rid it with my worthless $20 buffer. That didn't work either. In fact, it actually did the opposite which was made the stain look more apparent. The polish shined the car even more and gave the stain some good contrast. I've tried other chemicals from others who are somewhat newbs in the detailing business but nothing seems to work.

My guess on how this stain originally got there was the previous owner played a lot of paintball and one day his friends or someone hit his car. The owner never bothered to wipe it off and the paint began to eat through the clearcoat and maybe the paint of the car especially when left in the sunny southern california weather. I also know that the previous owner went through those automated carwashes a lot and used those liquid spray on waxes to wax it since he was too lazy to do it by hand. And then oxidation occured and the paint stain became less apparent so I didn't see it when I first bought the car.

Also besides the paint ball stains, I am seeing what looks to be like soap scum stains as well in certain parts of my car. Haven't tried too hard to get that off yet but so far with the minimal effort I've put in, it hasn't worked too well.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get rid of these stains or could it just be that I just have to get a new paint job if I wanted my car looking perfect?

I've read through many posts on the forum so far and one thing I haven't tried yet is scratch x which I ended up buying yesterday so eventually I will try using it and see if it will make a difference. Decided to use this though its not a scratch, many on this forum seed to have good luck with it with bird dropping stains which my soap scub stains look similar to. If anyone can give me advice on how i can get around working on my paint with consumer level products (since thats kinda what I have access to easily right now without going online,) any advice would be very appreciated.

Any chance you can get some pictures of the paint, it would help us pinpoint what is wrong with it.

          What are you working on?

As in what kind of car?
Does it have a clear coat finish? Or a single stage paint?

Stains are usually topical for clear coats but with a single stage they can more easily penetrate into the paint.

The remedy is the same and that is you have to remove or abrade the stained paint off the surface until it's all removed or until you reach your comfort level as paint is thin and you don't have a lot of room to work with.
