    Flaky Wax

    I spent too many years neglecting my cars finish, now I'm paying for it and would like to get them back into good condition. I have two cars with two problems:

    #1: 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan with white flaky wax on hood, roof, and top edges. Sides of car are fine.

    Question: How do I get rid of the flaky wax and back to a shine?

    View - passenger side roof.


    Hood. I tried to use resin to get a shine back but either it didn't work or I did it wrong (I suspect the latter).




    #2: 2000 Mitsubishi with yellowing wax on hood.

    Question: How do I remove that yellowing wax so I can re-wax?

    Brighter spot is white car color. Darker area around it is yellowing wax. Bumps are just morning dew.

    Welcome to MOL!

    I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like two fairly severe cases of what is known as "clear coat failure." In other words, the clear coat has "had it" and it physically falling off of the car, and at this point there isn't *any* product that can restore the clear coat.

    Your only option is a re-paint at this time. Sorry for the bad news...

      I think you need to take it to a paint / body shop and have them look at it. The Caravan definatly has clear coat failure.

        Definitely wouldn't hurt, but don't let them talk you into trying to buff it out.

        I'm basically positive the white one is clearcoat failure. I've seen it first hand several times on white cars and it tends to look yellow just like that.

          That is a clear case of clear coat failure.

          Nothing you pour out of a bottle or scoop out of a can is going to fix this, the only honest fix and reply to your question is to have the car or affected panels repainted.

              Like the others said, CC failure..seeing as you are in the San Diego area we had a dark blue car that we took to Poway Chevrolet's Body Shop for some dent/scratch/paint work. I would recommend them or Auto Body Excellence on Poway Road is also good.
