Re: What light do you use to check your work?

I also have some of the worklights from Sears, they work well. Often, Home Depot has some of the worklights on sale, although they don't come with a tripod. I found a few last week for around $5 each.
NOTE: Post count does not reflect actual detailing knowledge.

They make your life a lot easier, and also help tons for taking pictures of defects.
The Halogen lights are very hot, dangerous, and use a lot of energy. But, they do show the defeats well and are cheap to buy. I use a combo of Fluorescent and Halogen Spot lights mounted on a Camera tripod, to save my neck from the HEAT of the big Halogen unit I have.

Is anybody using different lighting technologies? Such as Sodium Vapor/Metal Halide? Their more expensive, but the energy savings should make up for them after a while?

The Infratech CM5300 is operated by a momentary switch, and runs only on 110V, correct? I looked into one of those too. The feedback on the internet is great on this lighting system. I like the fact that it uses the 5300 light spectrum (Sun light), and only uses two 35 watt bulbs.

How do you like it and how are you using it in detailing?

They are VERY hot indeed, but as a mobile detailer it is really the only viable option for having constant lighting available. Metal halide lighting is obviously superior in performance, but it is incredibly expensive and being mobile it would be very easy to damage the lighting for me.

Halogens are really the only viable option for a constant source of lighting while working. To me, fluorescent has its place for finding particular flaws, in the "just right" conditions, but they are very poor at providing ample lighting while doing defect removal.

The 3m Sun Gun, infratech light, etc are also great tools, but they are "spot check" tools- not constant sources of light.

I wish I could have all of them...

Yes it's only good for checking your work.I use florescent and halogen while working.

I also like the combo of the Binkmann and a 500 watt halogen. Used that combo today for the first time. What a improvement.

Friends, the Sears hologen tripod lamp just went on sale today:

Same questions about UtiliTech and wattage...? Any opinions?
