which polish to choose - please advise

so for this thxgiving im gonna detail my cars, i ve been collecting the necessary goods and now have decided i want to add a polish into the mix

as in previous post, i do a gold class wash, dry, clay, cleaner wax if i have some, nxt via PC7336

well now i actually have meguiars pads, the 8006 and 9006 just came in today, and i have some nxt2 waitng to be use, but which polish should i use

i only have access to the pepboys, advance auto stores,
i dont know where in the ftlauderale area they actually have profesional line stuff, that is near the 33324 area.

plus i need your help deciding what to get.

i have a nautic blue mercs, most of the paint is 4 yrs old, the roof is original, the hood is 13 yrs or so. its a nice dark metallic overall in very good condition.

also is the 2005 granite gray mercs, which is nice paint overall, no major disasters that are visible

I typed in your address and a bunch of locations carry the Professional Line.

You really didn't mention the condition of the paint (swirled, not clear, etc), so here are some of the most common products used.

M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish (M8332)
M80 Speed Glaze (M8032)
M82 Swirl Free Polish (M8232)

Start out with the least aggressive (M82). If that doesn't work, you can try M80. And if that doesn't work, M83 is your next step. Once the defects are removed to your satisfaction, you can apply your choice of protectants.


Having reread your post, do you want a polish to remove swirls or just a plain polish?

If you're looking for a polish to remove swirls, read the above section.

If you're looking for a polish, you can choose between DC3, M03 (M0316), M05 (M0516), M07 (M0716), or M81 (M8132).

I went ahead and put the part numbers on there to help your dealer out.

i guess i will try the m80, keep it mild

its amazing how many diff products there, it can be confusing.

in regrads to the condition of my paint, im not sure, its probably a mixture of good and bad.

I would go with M80, very versatile product that delivers great results.
If you are looking into a Pure Polish then you could try out M07 or M03 or M81.

Good choice. M80 is the go-to polish for everyone here who uses a PC.

I am finding M80 a real pleasure to work with. The hardest part is identifying that point where the diminishing abrasives have broken down. You don't want to stop until that happens, but you don't want to continue polishing after that happens. I haven't figure that out yet. I'm sure the MOL experts will be able to offer counsel on how to properly work M80.

#80 should start to go clearish when its fully broken down. There are some videos on Autopia i think to show this. A question i do have is how do resprayed panels react to originals. For example i did a Fiat recently (non metallic) #80 with Polishing pad via PC, this worked fine on the original paint, but the side i think is resprayed had average swirls marks but the paint seems as hard as nails, so this is what i tried

#80 with Polishing Pad
#83 with Polishing Pad
#83 with Cutting Pad
3M Fast Cut Plus with Cutting pad.

all this made little differance all pads were the 6", nxt steps i was thinking Spot Cutting Pad or Rotary?

I'd say wait til the new stuff comes out!

Vdub, waiting for the new products (SwirlX and ScratchX 2.0) to arrive at your local auto store (presumably sometime in January) is not a bad idea. They are the products of the future for folks like you and me. In the meantime you might consider trying out ColorX with your PC and yellow polishing pad (speed 4-5). I know you are eager to work on your car with your PC and new pads. ColorX would be a good product for you to begin with, and it's easily available. You could then top it with NXT and a finishing pad (speed 3).

If you want to go with the optional pure polish I would suggest getting a bottle of #5. This is great to use in more humid environments like we encounter here in Florida.

Forget the name on the label, look to see which category a product is in,

Pure Polish - Non-abrasive
Cleaner/Polish - Contains diminishing abrasives, has the ability to remove paint
