  • UQD: How many mists?

Quick detailing with UQD makes me nervous. I'm afraid I will instill new swirls and even scratches into my black paint.

How many mists do you typically use per panel or section? How many for a hood? a door? the trunk?

One more question: Have you ever experienced the towel "dragging" rather than sliding over the paint, even though you waxed the car only 3 weeks earlier? I don't usually quick detail--I feel more comfortable with dusting the car with my OXO car duster. But last night I thought I'd do a quick UQD detail, but found the towel dragging. I put on more liquid, but it didn't seem to help much. I probably swirled the heck out of the car.

    TIA.

I depends on the size of the area you are working on. I normally spray until i can see the mist on the car and then wipe dry. It is probably between 5-15. I can not say exactly. Sorry I can not help with the towel dragging.

As to how much product to mist onto the surface that depends upon how big of an area you're wiping but it should be small area, like 16" square or so...

The correct answer is you want to mist an ample amount of product, not too little, not too much...

With the towel dragging problem, maybe trying spraying some on the towel too.

Would anyone agree that it's in the nature of the MF towels to kind of cling to the paint, giving the OP the dragging effect he is referring too?

Well, you certainly wouldnt want to push down hard on the towel when dusting across.... And of course a wet towel will cling too.

As for drag, not really sure what to say, keep your microfiber polishing cloth folded 4 ways to give you plenty of cushion between your hand pressure and the surface of the paint. Start with a dry microfiber, spread the product around and then turn the microfiber to a dry side for wipe-off.

                  Re: UQD: How many mists?

I personally find that I get drag when I have too much product. When the towel is too wet it tends to cling to the surface.

I like to spray UQD to the surface (unless I need to avoid overspray for some reason) and my general rule is to move the arm holding bottle quickly and lightly mist over the surface I am going to work. The mist should cover at least 90-95% of the area, but not too thick.

Then I use one designated "wet" side of the towel (for the very first swipe I spray the towel once or twice) and work very gently over the area. Next, I quickly flip to a dry side and gently "dry buff" the same area only. I repeat the process over the entire vehicle.

If I start to get drag I re-fold the towel as this occurs for me once the towel becomes overly saturated.

                    Re: UQD: How many mists?

You want to spray enough so that the surface is evenly coated with a fine mist. Any dry areas could cause swirls. Personally I do not like to QD. Only time Ill QD is after a really good rain to get rid of that film IF I didnt drive it. If it hardly rains you may notice there is a buildup of dust that was collected from the air by the rain. Mike noticed this and took some pictures of it, I will not QD if that happens.

Ive also had problems with the towel dragging and at times it can be very annoying. If you try to 'push' the towel it wont helps matters. Try to 'pull' the towel over the finish without putting very much pressure on it.

Same goes for cleaning glass. Ive found that the MF WW towels sold in the housewares section at walmart work out great for cleaning glass with. Just a personal note..

                        Re: UQD: How many mists?

Although I use Last Touch, I more or less use the same technique as Mark for application and removal. I mist an ample amount of LT on the paint and lightly drag the folded MF across the paint to lift any dust or dirt. This first light slow drag lifts the dirt and dust and leaves the paint clean but still damp from the LT. The side of the MF used to do the initial wipe is usually visibly very dirty. I flip the MF to a clean side and lightly buff the paint dry.

I will feel the drag on the MF until I refold to a completely dry side and then when I buff the same area it feels smooth. It takes me 25 -30 minutes to QD my Camry. I use 3 to 4 MF towels and I do it every other day.

I never wipe or buff real fast and always use light pressure. If I look real hard when my car is in the sun I can see a few light scratches, but no swirls.

                            Re: UQD: How many mists?

I use to dust off the car regularly. But for me it makes sense to use a qd to lift the particles away from the paint. Instead of dragging them with a dry duster. That being said, I never really noticed instilling scratches either way. Just like i said, to me it makes more sense using a lubricant, a qd to give it a touch up between washings. When appropriate to do so.
