  • Avoiding wipe marks from drying on black paint??

Just wondering if you guys have any tips on avoiding having wipe marks left behind after washing the car?

This is what I'm talking about... (Yes my bonnet has lots of rock chips. )

I've tried chamois'ing, using microfibre towels, just leaving it to dry (leaves water spots, as expected) and rinsing the car more thoroughly to ensure that there's no suds left over on the car when I dry it but it doesn't seem to do the trick. I've considered buying an air compressor and using that to dry the car as I've heard that can work on black cars, any thoughts? Really ruins the shine.

I dry while using a QD spray fairly often.

After I dry the vehicle I follow up with a microfiber and some UQD. You could always use another QD of your choice as well.

+1 on Murr. QD ought to help you remove those wipe marks. Some like to wipe the car down (whilst still having slight wipemarks on the car) and QD (UQD/SD/LT) them to dry using good MFs (Supreme Shine and Ultimate Wipes are great).

BTW, if your using a compressor to blow the bits of water off the car - consider having a filter (water & oil) on it.

        Hope this helps.

I don't think the rules would permit me linking to it but I use a small garden blower that can be found on E Bay I paid 10 bucks for mine been using it for about 4 years.
Advantages over air compressor are much more volume cost less to operate and it will not spit oil or water.

Some use a regular leaf blower but I tried that and it is to awkward to use the little garden blower is much better for drying your car.
I have three Black vehicles and have never had a problem with streaks or wipe marks.

+3. I am another fan of using a qd to wipe away the swipe marks.

Actually just recently started having this problem. After drying go over with UQD it will take care of the marks you are talking about.

What I use it chamois followed by the water magnet.
Chamois will absorb most of the water and then go with my water magnet in that section leaving the paint looking perfect.

I use this technique on my car that is well maintained and also on cars that I work on that are neglected and always get the same results.

Lots of great replies, but I didn't see anything about taking off the hose nozzle and letting the water run gently over the car. On my vehicle, doing it this way, practically all the water just runs off, and then my small waffle weave simply dries the rest. No wipe marks on my car, as I just lay the cloth on and pat and then lift off. The sides usually need no drying at all.

Excellent advice and a good "Best Practice" for a black car.

                        How's the M16 doing?

Re: Avoiding wipe marks from drying on black paint??

Bought a new MF cloth and tried some QD with the new cloth to dry the car after a wash this morning. Came up beautifully! No wipe marks at all.

I'd like to try taking the nozzle off and letting the water run, but we're in pretty severe water restrictions at the moment. Driest state of the driest continent and all that. Technically, I'm not meant to wash the car at all but at least with a trigger it saves some water. I may give this a try next time just for experimental purposes though, thanks!

+5 is it? flood the car, blot dry with chamios and then UQD.
