  • Fiberglass Corvette

One of my teachers at school has a Corvette with fiberglass. The car is really nice and I really want to detail it for her. So today I hinted at that, by saying that I detail cars kinda. She said I do not know if she was joking or not , but she said I could do it if I wanted. She also said that she thinks she needs some special wax for fiberglass. Has anyone heard of this? If so is it true, What kind of wax should you put on fiberglass?

No.. just need your regular clay/clean/polish/wax for paint.

      Re: Fiberglass Corvette

Keep this in mind for the future for any car you work on...

It doesn't matter what the underlaying panels are made out of because you're only working on the exterior surface coating. If this exterior surface coating is paint then you treat it just like paint on any other car.

Your question is a good one as lots of car owners are under the misconception that because their car is made of Fiberglas or some other composite material they have to use something special. For some reason they don't think the issue through deep enough to understand they're still working on paint if the component is painted.

      Educate her in the process.

        Re: Fiberglass Corvette

Since 1984 Corvettes have not been made of fiberglass it is called SMC but like Mike pointed out it makes no difference what it is made of you treat it like any other painted surface.

A word of caution if you use a rotary on a C4 the back portion that holds the tail lights is made from Rubber it is part of the rear bumper and it will heat very fast and the paint will just fall off in large pieces.

This is something that many learned the hard way so in some circumstances it does make a difference what the paint is on especially if you use a rotary.

I do not know exactly. I think it is within the past 10 years. I told her today that she does not need a special wax, and she says she was told she needs a special wax. I said that is probably their way to get money, and because it is Corvette.

Will you be using a PC or polishing by hand.
