When waxing manually, do I need to use much "passion behind the pad" or is just a little pressure good? Also, when doing it manually, how many passes do you usually make over any given area? Thanks.

Re: How much "passion" for waxing?
Kinda depends on the type of wax and what you're trying to accomplish with the finish. If it's a cleaner type wax (like ColorX/66/etc) then a little passion can help to remove light surface defects. On a pure wax then just working it over the surface gently is all you need. To insure that you're getting complete coverage, two coats in either case fits the bill.

I assume you mean a pure wax, such as nxt 2.0, you really should put much pressure on it at all. 2.0 is really easy to apply. you want to make sure you get good coverage, you dont need to go over an area multiple times for one coat, you get a thin even coat. you can put coats on back to back, but I've heard it's best to do them about a day apart.2004 Mustang GT - Sonic Blue

Good catch on ColorX and #66 (and new D151!), I would have forgot.
I tend to look at the car at an angle as you want a THIN coat of wax and overlap when applying.

The way or the amount of passion you put behind the pad depends upon the condition of the finish, the type of wax you're using and what you're trying to accomplish.
For a finish in excellent condition, you want to use enough pressure to engage the surface of your applicator pad with the finish to spread the wax out for even and thorough coverage. Usually 2-3 passes over each square inch using an overlapping circular motion.
It's ALWAYS easier to spread any product out over the surface using circular motions versus any other motions in any other direction.
Here's a tip... as you're waxing your car, turn your wax pad over often an visually inspect to make sure no dirt particles or contaminants of any type have got onto your wax pad. If discovered either pick the particulate off or switch to a new clean applicator pad. This of course works best for light colored wax applicator pads.
