  • Stuck in Step 2 - Dried Cleaner + Dust

I'm rather a stickler for netiquette and did a lot of lurking and forum searching before even thinking about bothering you guys with my question(s). I just could not find an answer using the forum search and Google (site:meguiarsonline.com ). Please pardon me if this situation has been addressed.

I’m in the military and during the work week, I’m in San Diego but for the weekends, I’m in my hometown in Orange County (an hour and a half north). I’m a brand new car owner (my _first_ car as well!) and have studied a great deal about detailing. Now…to the point!

After step 1 of washing the paint with Gold Class, I dried the vehicle with a microfiber waffle weave and clayed the car. I then proceeded to use Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner, applying it by hand with a Meg’s Foam Applicator pad, removing excess with a cotton terry cloth and getting the rest with a separate cotton terry cloth. I took it very seriously and spent a considerable amount of time to get to this step. By this time, it was about 7:00 PM on Sunday evening and I was working in the dark (no lit garage to work in). I decided to call it quits for the weekend then called my wife so we could head down to San Diego. As we were driving away, the headlights illuminated the back of the car I was working. I noticed residual cleaner still left on the bump (and probably on lots of other parts of the car). I didn’t get all the cleaner like I thought I did by using a second cloth altogether.

I know the label of the cleaner says to not allow it to dry. My first question is "What kind of damage should I expect to the clear coat/paint with residual DC1 dried on the bottle?"

I also have some New Car Glaze (#7) to apply and waxing left to do. The car is semi-stored; she has not been driven and has been under a carport since this past Sunday evening. When I come back Friday afternoon I am expecting to see that dust has accumulated. Can any of you fine fellow detailers recommend what I should do to continue the 5 steps from where I left off without having to run a wash/drying/claying/cleaning all over again? I do have Quik Detailer on hand. I was considering using the QD and a microfiber to wipe off the dust but I’m afraid it will incur scratches. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help!

No damage... just swipe it off with a clean towel, maybe with a little QD sprayed on it.

Its hard to say how much dust, what kind of protection your car port is giving. Light dust in a garage is one thing, but sand and dirt blowing onto a car for a week is another. If you wanted to be safest, just wash it, then you can polish and wax.

I would say moderate to heavy dust as my mum drives and parks her vehicle behind my car. The tail end of the vehicle edges out a bit from the car port.

I'm wondering if I should polish over again since there really should not be any bonded contaminants, right?

I would definitely rinse and wash the car, and then if anything remains follow that with a spray detailer (Best in my opinion is Last Touch, others will work though) and see what happens.

If that still doesn't work, you can apply the DC cleaner over the areas with the dried product and see if that re-wets it and breaks it up.

Give the car a good washing. Try using microfiber towels to remove any product. I think you have a higher probability of instilling scratches using the terry towels. Good luck.

I would go with washing, that will remove the dust and the dried product.

Thanks guys. The consistency and quick replies are well appreciated.I realized I posted incorrectly before about "polishing all over again" when I really meant "cleaning all over again."I think I'll go ahead and wash the car again and move onto polishing since there shouldn't be any bonded contaminants.

This would be the correct next step.
