  • Help with clay bar!!!

    Hey All,

I've heard great things about the clay bar and have seen some great results, but i am still so hesitant to use it on my car...Scared that i will use it wrong and will scratch the paint work... Any advice would be appreciated!!!!

    Thanks

I know were you coming from. I was hesitant at first to clay my vehicles also. After giving your vehicle a good washing, Use the smooth surface clay kit. Make sure you have plenty of quik detailer for your lube. Take about a third of the clay bar. Knead it and flatten it out. Mist the qd on a 2x2 foot square area. Rub the clay over the misted area, wipe dry with the supreme shine microfiber that comes in the kit. Move on to the next area and repeat. Believe you me, it is much more intimidating then it really is.

Good luck. You will be fine.

      No need to be scared.
Just concentrate on what you are doing, feel the paint and hear how silent it becomes, IT'S AWESOME!!

Oh and fold the clay continuously, so you'll be working on a fresh side always

Dont be scared... use plenty of QD as lube. Buy an extra bottle just in case.

One of the things Meguiar's has been teaching in the Professional Industry and we've been preaching on the forum is to always work clean.

That means clean surface, clean garage, clean hands, clean clay, clean polishing cloths etc.

If you don't introduce any dirt or contaminants into your claying process and you use good technique then you won't have any problems.

As a precaution, inspect your work as you move around the car to insure no contaminants have entered into the process and thus instilling any scratches.

For what it's worth, at our Saturday classes we have hundreds of people each year go through the class and learn how to clay for the first time and to day have never had any problems.

Check this out too..... it's in our "Information Station" which has TONS of helpful information to help you be successfull...

It really depends on how contaminated the cars are. You'll probably need at least half a clay bar to clay a vehicle that's never been clayed before.

Make sure to properly wash the car with car wash shampoo and mitt before claying to remove loose contaminants that might scratch the paint.

Also, what I like to do is to move my hand gently across the area I'm just about to clay to "feel" the area and make sure there aren't any loose contaminants.

Like aready stated it really depends on how much contamination is on the car. I bought Meguiar's detailer line mild clay which is 200grams in weight. I cut this into 3rds and have only completely used 1 of the 3rds, i am almost ready to get rid of the 2nd piece and this clay bar is 5 years old.The first piece clayed about 10 vehicles some bad some not so bad. The second piece has clayed about 7 vehicles( mostly trucks). I have done some heavily contaminated cars and some have been almost clean. My best piece of advice is it is always good to cut the bar into 3rds just incase you drop a piece on the floor then you only put one small piece in the garbage not the entire clay bar. This goes hand in hand with what Mike Phillip's posted always work clean.
