  • Removing Deep Etching/Swirls

    Hey Guys.

Few questions for you all. FYI I am very new to detailing.

I have two cars, both of them have some pretty deep etching and swirl marks.

One of them sat at a dealership for months at a time so when I purchased it, obviously it had been sitting unprotected for quite some time, the other one has many little scratches and lots of wear and tear. Needs a full detail.

Was wondering what products I can use myself to improve these conditions with my paint. I have #7 Polish and #26 wax currently along with the cleaner/wax.

I can get pictures if needed. I'd like to learn this myself instead of hiring someone to do it.

If you are totally new to detailing, I suggest that you have a pro do the first detail and then you work on maintaining what he/she has done.

But if you send some pics we'll be glad to try to "walk you through the process". You should be ready to part with a bit on money.

    Tom

hiya, there is much you can do to improve the car, it can be achieved by hand or machine and there are many different options and combinations, but any problems or questions im sure anyone of us will try and help, photos do say alot so if we see the problems and the make of cars this may help in suggestions for the scratches and swirls for etc

Yeah I think that's a pretty good idea. I'll have to check out some of the local guys here and see what they can do.

I would, however, like to learn how to do all of this myself.

I'll get some pictures when I get a decent camera.

Well, there are a lot of things to consider here.

For one, how soon do you want the cars to be vastly improved? If you are ok with waiting a month or so as you read up and observe what others do on the forum then you will likely have the confidence and the knowledge at that point to tackle it yourself.

Most people are able to use a DA polisher like the Meguiar's G110 and achieve fantastic results without extensive training or experience. You would ultimately need to spend around $200 or so for the polisher and products, but you would pay that or more for a single car to get a paint correction (easily).

Or you can do what Tom suggested and have a pro do it first (It can be hard to find someone that truly knows what paint correction is, though) and then try and improve your washing methods to keep it looking good.

Take a look around and think it over.

          Mark

            Thanks for the advice.

I am really into doing all my own work when it comes to cars, and this is something that I really want to learn so maybe it would be a good idea to invest in myself and a polisher, at the end of the day I would save a ton of money doing it myself, maybe even make some here and there.

This is something I have been thinking about for a while, but obviously as winter sneaks up on us I realize this is something that needs to get done within the next month or two.

Besides a DA polisher what would I need to buy to get started? I currently have some #26 and #7 but I think I will need something a little stronger to really get the paint to where I want it.

I'll try to get some pics and see what you all think.

Well, it might actually make more sense to simply do a thorough paint cleaning, followed by a solid coat or two of wax before winter than to try and do the paint correction now. Odds are the paint will take some abuse over winter, so you might as well wait to fix it after winter.

That said, you should pick up some Clay bar kits, 1 for each car. That is the first step for bringing your paint cleaning to the next level. Claying is really quite simple, and makes a big difference.

Next, you have a few options...you can get the 3 step Meguiar's Deep Crystal cleaning system very inexpensively at your local stores, and even do it all by hand if you want. That is a great starting point, and then you can top it with either #26 or NXT 2.0 wax for good measure with winter right around the corner.

That sounds good to me. Thanks for your help and advice. Now I just need to get to work.

I'll have to post some before and afters for you guys when I get both of the cars done.

                  Sounds great!

We can touch back on the "advanced" version when the time has come. Stick around MOL and you will feel like you're attending a university (A fun one, though!)

It is going to soon be darn cold in Kentucky. I suggest claying both cars and then following up with Meguiars ColorX. ColorX is an excellent one step cleaner/wax. It will come with come with a foam pad for application. Buy some good microfiber cloths for removal. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised with the results.

This is also a great option and would be considerably faster. It's really up to you
