  • Dual Action and Mirror Glaze #2 and #9

Working on a black Frontier that has only been clayed with DC #1 and NXT waxed since new, last detail was about 3 months ago. I noticed quite a few imperfections, micro-scratches, webs etc so I picked up a bottle of #2 and #9 last night.

I tried #9 with the DA on 6 with two passes and still saw plenty of scratches.

I switched over to #2 with the DA on 6 and made two addtional passes. It turned out good but not to my satisfaction. I am working on the hood and the forward 18" take a lot of abuse but I know it can be polished out better.

I read on the forum that #2 and #9 are not for DA's but it stated by hand, DA or rotary so I tried it.

I picked up a bottle of #1 this afternoon (back-up since the store is 10 miles from home) and a HF 7" variable speed polisher. The polisher is rated for 300-300 rpm and may last a year if I am lucky but I am not a detailer by trade.

Should I start over with #9 and the rotory or #2?

#9 worked pretty good for me on removing light scratches and marring. I know you said you made two passes but maybe try dropping the speed down to 5 and work the polish a little longer. Work small areas and just work the orbital slowly in your cross lapping pattern until the polish has fully broken down.

M09 is the MOST gentle cleaner/polish in our line and if you look at the picture on the label it shows Mike Pennington using it with a rotary buffer, this is a visual indicator of how the product is best used to remove light swirls. When using with a DA, a tool with a clutch that the pad will stop spinning and oscillating if too much pressure is applied means it's usually too gentle of a tool to remove swirls using a very gentle cleaner/polish out of most paints.

M02 was reformulated a couple of years ago so it could be used by hand and DA polisher, before it was rotary buffer only. This means you'll find threads on this forum teaching people to read the back label to make sure they are using the version they have correctly. You don't want to use the Rotary Buffer ONLY version by hand, DA or Orbital as it can scour the paint.

The new formula for M02 is about as aggressive as M83 which is the most aggressive product Meguiar's recommends of use with a DA Polisher.

Before trying a new or more aggressive product, make sure your not making any of the common mistakes as making just ONE mistake will dramatically affect whether you get good results or not.

Most people not using a DA Polisher correctly are making one of the below mistakes with carving out too large of a section and moving the polisher too fast over the surface being very common.

If you're moving up to machine polishing, be sure to read the below thread before starting...
Tips & Techniques for using the G110, G100, G220 and the PC Dual Action Polisher
      (These are all similar tools)

Here's a list of the most common problems
      1. Trying to work too large of an area at one time.
      2. Move the polisher too fast over the surface.
      3. Too low of speed setting for removing swirls.
      4. Too little pressure on the head of the unit.
      5. Too much pressure on the head of the unit so the pad quits rotating.
      6. Not keeping the pad flat while working your product.
      7. Too much product, too little product.
      8. Not cleaning the pad often enough.

First, M01 Medium Cut Cleaner is a rotary buffer only product, don't use it with a DA style polisher or a traditional Orbital Polisher or by hand, you will scourer the paint.

Before going any further, look at the pictures in this thread and let us know exactly what type of polishers you're working with.

Re: Dual Action and Mirror Glaze #2 and #9

I was using my G100A with the #9 and #2.

I bought a Chicago Electric polisher at Harbor Freight that is 1000-3000 rpm for 30.00 and will use the backing plate and pads from my G100. I generally buy quality tools the first time but I am not ready to pay 200.00 for a polisher this close to Christmas and I should not need it that often.

I would trust the direction on the product before the picture on the label; and, the forum provided contradicting information regarding the method of application for #2 and #9.

Re: Dual Action and Mirror Glaze #2 and #9

I used it but the speed control is flaky and it won't even keep me happy using it once a year, the Chicago Electric buffer goes back to HF tomorrow. I can see where a rotary would be the tool of choice in a lot of cases but probably not mine.

It was easy to see that I had some scratching from the #1 with the polisher after making a few passes in one area. I swapped the pad back to the G100 and finished the hood with the #1 (against sound advice) on number 6 with heavy pressure but not enough to stop the rotation of the pad and it looked good. The sun was falling and I was in full shade but swapped pads and went to #2 and made two passes which cleaned up after the #1 no problem.

It looks a hellava lot better than it did on Monday!

I switched pads for two passes with #9 and it started sprinkling. This front will probably blow through pretty quick so I can dry it and buff it with MF's.

I will try a new panel tomorrow or possibly this weekend using the G100 and #2 followed by #9. The results look far better than DC #1 to me.

If you post the link to the conflicting information I'll investigate and need be correct it.

If in fact you found conflicting information it would be the exception, definitely not the rule.

We write the copy on the directions and also place the photo on the label so trusting one is trusting the other, not trusting one is not trusting the other.

Re: Dual Action and Mirror Glaze #2 and #9

It is all in the timing. I jumped online yesterday to read about the products and then went to the store to buy #82 and #83 but they didn't carry it. The #2 and #9 were on the shelf so I bought them. Both bottles indicated they were acceptable with the G100 and then I posted my thread today.

Of course, you did state the products were reformulated...no harm no foul.

I also read the bottle on the #1 that I bought today and it clearly states rotary only as you stated in this thread.

No problem as far as I can see with the product or the directions.

I just finished a coat of NXT and it looks and feels like glass. Would it meet a true detailers standards, probably not.

Thanks for the help, I don't post much but I read the forums quite often.

Mike, should this read "The new formula for M02 ..."?

                  Yes.

Thanks for catching that and I'll edit my post and correct it.
