  • Keeping it simple with a PC buffer

    Hello all,

I am an "old school" detailer with three (3) cars to maintain. I LOVE spending time outside during the fall and winter here in Florida ... not so much during the summer. My old routine involved washing, drying, applying a polis/glaze called "Astroshield" followed by buffing it off. The results were great and I was very happy ... until I got the urge to buy another tool, the PC 7424 and an expensive pad set (2 each orange, yellow, white and black).

My old routine involved just a few hours work with (what I thought) were impressive results. I hope to experiment to see if I can improve the finish of the following cars:

    Silver 2007 Civic
    Dark Blue 2004 Frontier
    Pearl White 1993 Lexus SC400

My reason for posting this thread was to lay out my goals, hoping that the community could guide me in one direct or another. My goal is to improve the car's finishes without adding too much additional work. Here is what I would like to shoot for. I know that I need to go out and purchase at least one (or more) bottles of Meguiar's cleaner and or polish ... and I would hope to buy them locally.

    1. Wash
    2. Dry
    3. Clay bar (as needed
    4. Wash again
    5. Clean (remove imperfections, swirls, light scratches) using product ____?
    6. Final polish using something like Astroshield (it goes on and comes off so easily).

I want to keep it simple. I'm not into long, drawn-out tasks. I once bought a whole set of Mother's products that took two (2) days to apply. the results were far inferior to one application of Astroshield.

    Thanks all ...

I would use #80. This would take steps #4 and #5, and combine them into 1 step. #80 is an awesome product, and can remove quite a bit of swirls and scratches, polishes to a deep finish, plus is clean the paint at the same time. All with very little effort.

I don't know that brand of pads you bought, but picking the right one will leave your paints finish in pristine condition

I am with nick - # 80 is a very universal product and best of all it works.

      1. Wash/Dry
      2. Clay
      3. #80
      4. Wax/protect with your favorite wax or we can give you some suggestions on a Meguiars wax

Thank you Nick ... the question now is where can I pick this up? I've searched the Meguiar's website to no avail. Can anyone recommend a local supplier (in Central Florida)?

        Thanks ...

          Thanks ...

Can't help you there, unless you want to drive to north Texas I order all of my products through Rick over at Auto Detailing Solutions dot com

Maybe one of our lovely Floridians will chime in and get you to the Meguiar's supplier there.

I am over on the west coast of Florida. In my experience (so far), I have found Rick @ Auto Detailing Solutions to be the best in getting what you need and some very good advice on how to use it. The shipping takes 4 days to get to me. That's the only negative. Everything is packed very well. Try them, you will be happy.

              Nick/everyone ...

Is this the product that you recommend?:

Re: Keeping it simple with a PC buffer

From the color of your pads it sounds like you have Lake Country pads..
If you have scratches use the orange pad with #80 if that is not removing them use # 83 and the orange pad.

After the defects are removed use the white pad and #80

ADS is excellent and carrys all the Meguiars products.
If you have a Car Quest auto parts store locally they should have it also.

Their are a lot of polishes on the market but M80 is so easy to use it is prefect for a noobie at using a PC

I have used polishes from many different manufactures on my show car and after trying nearly everything M80 is still my favorite Polish.

Thanks Bart. I had no idea that Carquest carried this product. I just drove by one the other day ... I should have stopped. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they have it in stock. If not I'll order through the website.
