  • 10" Orbital Buffer Question

Well today is my birthday, and my father wanted to give me my present before he left for work. I opened the box and inside was a 10" orbital buffer with 3 'pads'... "applicator, polish, and terry." It isn't the Porter Cable 7424 that I wanted, but I couldn't say it wasn't the right product because I knew it was a thoughtful gift. He's the last person I'd call cheap, he just didn't know what to buy I guess and got whatever buffer they had in Home Depot or Loews.

ANYWAY... I've never owned any type of buffer before. Is this thing going to be an improvement over polishing/waxing by hand? How much worse is it than the Porter Cable and Makita products? Also, how would I use those 3 'pads' that came with it?

If you're working on clear coat paints, it's good for spreading products out. It's not effective at removing swirls and scratches because it doesn't have the power and the bonnet is too big.

There are two threads in our Hot Topics forum because your question comes up on the forum often enough it becomes a Hot Topic.

There's 4 pages of threads in "Hot Topics" with about 30 threads on each page. (That's a lot of "hot topics"). I'll see if I can dig these two threads up and post them here for more detailed answers to your questions.

It's great your Dad takes interest in what you're interested in and when it comes to gifts it is the thought that counts. Let us know what you're working on and we'll do our best to help you get the maximum benefit out of this tool.

Thanks Mike, I know its probably a step up from working by hand, 10" is so big though, IDK how I'm going to get it to work on small panels.

Like I posted, if you let us know what you're working on and what you're trying to accomplish with the paint we'll do our best to help you maximize the potential of your new polisher.

The advantages I've found with the orbital buffer are the quicker, more even application and removal of waxes than by hand. The orbitals just don't pack the punch to help you remove swirls. I just bought my G110, but I haven't used it yet (can't wait)....I'm trying to get enough pads to ensure that I can use the DA from start to finish. BTW, Meguiars direct is offering a really sweet deal on the G110 with a set of pads. If I had seen this BEFORE ordering from ADS, I would have ordered from Megs.
