  • Ash & dust on car

Ok, I live in Southern California and it's now FIRE SEASON 2008! YAY!!!

..... This is really getting annoying. I'm sure all the other So. Cal people on here can relate. Anyway, having said this, I can expect there to be dust and ash in the air from this point to a month or two from now.

What's the best way to deal with air pollutants like ash on the finish? Should I just continue to wash once a week, should I avoid QDing? Will ash scratch the paint or does it need to be removed ASAP? Thanks.

I would avoid QD'ing...washing is the safest. I think ash would scratch even more than just dust would.

I believe there was a thread on this last year. I did a quick search and could not find it. If I remember correctly the consensus was to wash the car as soon as possible. Good luck. Stay safe.

Re: Ash & dust on car

That helped a lot thanks! So what I gather is:

                1. Don't just rinse the car off.

                2. Wash it ASAP with Gold Class shampoo/conditioner.

                3. Clay

                4. ScratchX if needed

                5. Wax

Luckily there isn't any ash in the air around my home yet and hopefully it never will be. What do you guys say about dust? It's dry out now so it's very dust and my car is covered in it. Is it safe to QD panels on a dusty car or just wash? Thanks again!

Re: Ash & dust on car

If it's dry I'll dust it off with a duster so at least it's off the car. Washing is alway the solution to any "fallout" on your car. But when your at work and you see "stuff" on your car I try to get it asap, ie: the duster.

Just put a fresh coat of wax on my Prius. Should be good for a month, no point in washing it when a new fire just started 10 minutes west of here

Man, all I gotta say is this is the golden month of action for the fire departments. If you're a firefighter and you're bored, you won't be for very long in San Diego in October, haha.

I would use an air compressor to blow as much loose stuff off as possbile before washing it.

time to bump this thread once again with socal fires well under way

i just did a five step process the day before all the fires broke out

surprised no one mentioned this old trick in this thread or the one back in 2005 of a couple of tea spoons of baking soda with a bucket of water to rinse the vehicle off before you start washing
