If I can't remove scratches after several attempts with 'ScratchX', is the next step to try M-105?

Probably.
Probably yes.
Probably because so many people try ScratchX and don't get great results but it's using technique, not product.
I have the good fortune of having shown a lot of people how to remove scratches by hand for the last 6 years here at the Corporate office and often times when it comes time for teaching technique for applying ScratchX, you'll hear people watching say,
"That's not how I was applying it"
Meaning they weren't applying it the right way.
Regardless, M105 works faster, it's more effective and it requires less applications and work to get better results.

Thanks for the replies. I will give it another shot, using an applicator pad instead of a terry cloth to see if that will help before I go to the M-105.
Really appreciate the help in taking care of my car's finish.

What are you working on?
Are you trying to remove swirls and scratches over the entire finish or just some spots?
If you're trying to remove swirls and scratches over the entire car then definitely spring for the M105, it's so much faster and easier to get great results...

Thanks for the clarification. I am not trying to do the whole car, but I am trying to do the hood, roof, and trunk. The hood has some rock dings that may require a trip to the paint shop to fix.....don't want any rust getting started. There are some spots on the hood that I can't yet determine the cause of.
The roof still has the spot where the first owner had a sunroof wind deflector installed, and the trunk has a scratch or two that I can't seem to fix with ScratchX, hence my interest in M-105.
There are a few swirls in different places but I can probably eventually learn to deal with them.

At this point, the recommendation would be the same, pick up some M105 and use this to tackle these problem areas.
Do be mindful that you do have a limited measurement of clear resin, (film-build), to work on and that not all below surface defects can be completely removed but the can usually be improved to the point that you can live with them.
The defects caused by the Wind Deflector are likely imprints in the paint caused by where portions of the deflector makes contact with the paint. It's like it's smashed down the paint wherever contact was made due to pressure, vibration, etc.
If that is the case then you can usually improve them but not remove them, if it's just scratches then if they're not too deep you can remove them by hand using M105
