  • want to strip wax - dawn vs paint cleaner

    Hi,

Just wanted to say I should have found this forum earlier! I love detailing

now - on the the question:

i've only waxed my beetle with GC and NXT, but I think it's time to go deeper and start over. Do you suggest using Dawn to wash, or using the paint cleaner to remove the old wax? - the paint cleaner is from the 3 step. Please let me know! Thank you.

I'm not sure if Megs new Body Solvent is too strong for this task, otherwise, why not use something like Prepsol or Prep All, this will ensure that indeed all the old wax is gone. Assuming you already clayed, you could then proceed with your paint cleaning and polishing.

Hello, i really think you should not use a product as Dawn or any dishwashing detergent to clean your paint... sure it will strip wax but also will strip oils from your paint...

I would not use dawn on any car as i wont use DC1 or any paint cleaner to clean my dishes?

        Hi Paul,

Meguiar's would recommend using a paint cleaner like the Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner as a safe and effective way to clean the paint and remove most, if not all, any previously applied wax. AT least to the point where you have a fresh base to work with. For more cleaning power, you could use ScratchX.

Using chemical strippers is another option, but you risk dulling the finish and exposing your paint to potentially harsh chemicals for little or no benefit over what a product specifically formulated for cleaning paint will do.

As far as detergent washes go, some of the protection ingredients used in Meguiar's formulas are detergent resistant, so washing with a detergent solution doesn't automatically mean you will remove all of these ingredients.

I would opt for the paint cleaner.

          dawn is bad!
if you want to remove your wax any paint cleaner (dacp) will remove it and give you the benifit of adding some oils to your paint.
