  • What products to buy?

So I feel like a newbie all over again for asking this. I am not new to detailing by any means. I have my own detailing business, and am looking to transition over to Meguiars. I will have a few other brands, but like said, I would like to give Megs a try.

So what products do you recommend starting out with. I am looking mainly for compounds and polishes. Feel free to throw in a few dressings if needs be. As far as APC's , Glass Cleaners and degreasers, I have TOO MUCH as it is. (who can have too many detailing products anyways?)
(I work with both, a PC and Rotary, FWIW)

So give me a run down on what YOU recommend and why

I have, and use a lot, Megs #66 and some Scratch X

    so go from there...

#66- Because it is a great one step product for those whom do not want to pay for a 2+ step polish.
    Scratch-X- Because it's scratch-x
    M105- Why?
    D151- Why?
    DACP (#83)- Why?

this are ones I have/want to try. Please add your opinions....

    TIA
    -Chris

    Re: What products to buy?

Hi Chris, and welcome to MOL.

To specifically address the three products you asked "why?" about:

M105 - fast cutting when you need to pull out wetsanding marks, or are working on extremely hard paint. It also finishes incredibly well, almost defying logic in many instances.

D151 - because it's like M66 on steroids. We developed this product for high volume reconditioning establishments with the thought in mind of seriously outperforming the competition. We have a tendancy to set very high standards and as such many people are finding D151 is very quick to remove fairly severe defects and leaves a beautiful finish. Overkill for the intended market? Perhaps, but we're price competitive with performance that is miles ahead of the direct competition we were shooting at.

M83 - because sometimes M80 just isn't quite enough and a true compound may be too much. When you need a cleaner/polish with a fair bit more oomph, M83 fits the bill.

You also mentioned dressings, so allow me to offer up this little gem: Hyper Dressing. Buy a gallon of it and then get two spray bottles. Fill one bottle with a dilution ratio of 4:1 (water:HyperDressing) for a low shine dressing and fill the other with a 2:1 dilution ratio for a higher shine. One product, two final appearances.

And you can use it by hand so you'll have a product that will replace ScratchX and it does the job more efficiently.

      Can't say anything more...

        Thanks Fellas.

So does anyone else have any recommendations on what I should need up front in my arsenal?

        The list is as stands:

        D151
        M105
        M83

        What else?

Edit... I have bought, tried, and used Megs hyper dressing for a long time. Forgot to put that in my first post. Yes... it is an excellent product

          Wax... I have the following:
          GC Clear Coat
          Meg's Cleaner Wax
          #7 High Tech Yellow
          NXT 2.0

I all depends on what your customer's desired result is. My personal favorite is the NXT 2.0 (#21 is the rotary compliant version of NXT). but #7 has it's place too.

The issue is the diverse vehicle conditions and desired results, which causes a huge problem with Meguiar's products... They are all so good at what they do, you want to buy them all!!! (And, I'm on my way to that... Don't tell my wife!
The only reason some people get lost in thought... is because it is unfamiliar territory for them.

            Re: What products to buy?

I've got some of the following:

            M80
            M83
            M21
            M07
            D151
NXT 2.0 / Gold Class Liquid
            APC
            Hyper Dressing
            G100
            Lots of Pads
Various metal polishes / interior cleaners / quick detailers

With these options, I can just about cover all my bases. I might pickup some M105 just to have around the garage.

              Re: What products to buy?

M95 is a longer working option to M105. I've just started playing with it. Sometimes M105 seems to dry way too fast for me where as the M95 has a long working time sort of like M80.

                Re: What products to buy?

Thanks so far everyone. I'm not looking for LSP's really. I have enough.
Pads, APC's, buffers, tools, etc.... I have enough. You'd swear I have a retail outlet in my garage.

                #40
                M80
                M95

As for the type of work that my clients expect, I do a few 1-steppers, which the clients have no clue..... and those who respect a perfectly detailed car. (1-3 step polishing) So from one end of the spectrum to the other

                      Re: What products to buy?

                      My go to prods are:

M80 speed glaze: fast, light glaze that's very effective.

M07 Show car Glaze: outstanding pure polish.

M21 2.0 Synthetic sealant: Awesome shine, easy to work with, great durability.

M135 Synthetic detail spray: Quick and easy way to do touch-ups between detailing.

All Season Dressing: With stands the rain better than any other product I've tried.

Super Degreaser: Spray it on and watch the grease run.

I know you said you have plenty of glass cleaners but I have to suggest the Megs Detailer Line Glass Cleaner. It's like nothing I've ever seen and it last and lasts. I'd suggest a sample size from ADS or anyone else who sells sample sizes. It dilutes 10:1 so a 1 Quart sample gives you 11 Quarts of diluted window cleaner.
