  • Got some Meguiar's #16, now what?

I bought some Meguiar's #16. Not sure what to do with it. The last time I waxed several months ago, I clayed and did the 3step Crystal. It was excellent but I heard #16 is really good so I bought some.
I plan to clay only my hood, as it does feel a little rough, but the rest of the car is smooth as a babys bum.
Soo can I just clay the hood and then go over the whole car with the #16.
Orrrr, should I clay the hood, and go over over the entire car with a cleaner wax, and then the #16.
The car is black, no swirls, and paint is in great shape. I will be doing this with a 6 inch random orbital (worked well before) I am not taking this car to a show, just want a nice shiny black car with protection for the next few months.
    Thanks for the advice.

Basically, yes...just apply it as you would any other wax. I have a few tins myself, but haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. I have heard though that it can dry very hard if left on too long. It's meant to be a very tough and long lasting wax.

Just pay attention and use the finger swipe test to know when to remove it.

Yes. If you aren't sure if other areas need to be clayed you can do the plastic bag test Basically, after the car is well washed and cleaned, spray some QD or water on a panel and then put your fingers inside of a zip loc bag and run it over the paint. If it feels 100% smooth, no need to clay.

Pretty sure only the hood need claying, but I will check the rest. If it is only the hood, can I then just put #16 over the rest of the car? What about the old wax on the rest of the car if I only clay the hood? . There has to be some still on as there is still some beading on the roof and trunk. Thanks.

Clay what needs to be clayed, and wax away. No need to worry about old wax. If you can, take some pictures so we can all be green with envy of your rare and elusive wax

Make sure to put it on super thin. You will learn what thin is when you use #16. Put it on too thick and you will break your arm trying to remove it. When you apply it, it should almost be invisible thin.

                    This is correct.

M16 is a traditional "Hard Wax", that is it dries very hard when it dries and if you apply to thick of a coating it will darn near break your arm trying to wipe it off and many people will resort to scrubbing actions instead of wiping actions to remove it and this can instill scratches.

M16 usually doesn't work very well with the Swipe Test unless it's whisper thin...

Applying with an orbital buffer like this one mean scooping the wax out of the can and smearing it onto the bonnet. This makes it hard to apply a thin coat.

You will be better off applying this wax by hand with a foam applicator pad. Hold your foam wax applicator pad between your thumb and your 4 fingers and then spin it on top of the wax in the can until you sort of liquefy the very upper surface of the wax. This will enable the wax to penetrate into the foam and then you can easily spread it over the paint and lay down a thin coat.

Do NOT scoop this wax out of the can, that is the wrong technique.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and apply only to about a 2 foot section and let it dry and then wipe it off. See if you like using this wax over a small section and see what it's like to use before applying this over the entire car.

I've used as much or more of M16 in my life as anyone and can attest first hand that if you apply too thick of a coating it can be very difficult to remove so you really want to dial in your application technique before going over the entire car.

                    Hope this helps...

Re: Got some Meguiar's #16, now what?

Since you already clayed the whole car, And thinking about just claying the hood. I would take it a step farther. Clay the hood, roof, and trunk area. This are the areas that usually get the most contaminants. So do the 2 extra areas and really see what #16 can do for your black car.

Wow, now you guys are getting me a little scared. If you are not recommending me to use my buffer, and do it all by hand, I am going to end up with arm muscles like you fellows. LOL
I will try a little, really thin, on the trunk with a foam pad by hand and see what it is like. I can always for back to the Deep Crystal. It was great to use.
Again, thanks for the great help.

Haha, don't be scared! Just do a test area like Mike suggested and get an idea of how it works before you do the entire car.

If you waxed your car several months ago, I think that you should wax it again with a good cleaner wax and then apply #16. I would use Meguiar's stuff in the burgandy bottle or ColorX. Then use #16 just like Mike suggested.

I'll bet that I have used #16 longer than Mike. Sure was glad when NXT came out.
