  • New Car, New to detailing-stripping wax

Hi, I recently bought a new 2008 TL and recently waxed it using the nxt liquid wax. It is a black car and Im wondering how many times do i wax a car before i should strip off the wax? I heard that dawn dish detergent strips off wax fine but is that really safe for car paint? does meguiar have a product for this and what would you recommend. Thanks

First of all, welcome to MOL!

As for your questions, it is difficult- err impossible to say exactly how long wax will last as the variable are endless. In real world applications, expect 1-2 months with regular washing. You should be able to physically feel and see a change in the behavior of the paint (especially with water on it) to see when it needs new wax.

Personally, when I want to strip wax from paint I will mix in a small of amount of Meguiar's Degreaser from the Detailer Line of products into my wash bucket.

Hopefully Mike Phillips can chime in with an official answer to your question later today.

If the car is a daily driver then it probably sees enough wear & tear that you don't need to remove anything just add a fresh coat in your next detailing session.

If you want clean the paint back to a fresh base then that's real simple, just apply a light paint cleaner like Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner. Apply to small section, work over the paint and then wipe-off.

Repeat this around the entire car and then apply your choice of wax.

The “need to strip wax with dish soap” thing comes from a manufacturer that insists you remove any previous wax before applying their product.

If you keep using the same wax, or any compatible pproduct (all Meg’s waxes and sealants are compatible with each other), you never need to strip wax.

I would use a cleaner like DC1 to clean up. But on my DD I will just rewax it every 1-2 months. Every other re wax I will use a cleaner or pure polish.

Instead of using dawn, I would follow the 5 steps and by claying you should not have a old wax issue. Even new vehicles benefit from claying.

Thank you for all the replies. I was wondering Mike Phillips, can the deep crystal paint cleaner have any way of harming your paint? Also if I keep using the same wax which is nxt from Meguiar every like month or 2 months would I have to use the paint cleaner? I heard from some websites that as you keep applying wax, old wax builds up and dull your finished and I dont know if this is true or not?

Ill let Mike give an official answer as well, but in my own personal knowledge bank and experience I would tell you that Crystal Paint Cleaner will absolutely NOT harm your paint. The only way you could harm your paint while using that product would be using an incredibly dirty or contaminated pad. The product itself when used properly will NEVER hurt paint.

As for your other questions, you do not need to strip NXT waxes between coats. There is not going to be a dulling effect *from the NXT wax*, but in theory as time goes on and you wash your car you could induce micro-marring (tiny scratches) which in theory could reduce gloss and "dull" the paint. But, with proper washing this is something that needs to be addressed maybe only once a year with a light polish.

Feel free to layer the NXT on top of itself once every week, two weeks, or two months...they will all be fine.

Hey Mark thanks for the incredible quick response. I do have one more question about drying my car if that is appropriate in this forum. When ever Im done washing my car, I try to dry the car with multiple types of cloth including microfiber and a shamy but whatever I tried for some reason when I wipe over the water after Im done washing the car, like right when I wipe off with the cloth I see water marks instantly right where the water just was but I didnt even let the water on the car dry yet?

Ps: before I washed the car there was no watermarks at all.

Re: New Car, New to detailing-stripping wax

It is an interesting question how often one should clean the paint of one's car, whether by using DC1 or a cleaner wax or some other polish. According to the recent poll on this question, the very large majority of MOL members prefer to "clean" their paint at least twice a year. So that is the "rule" I have decided to adopt for my wife's daily driver. The important thing, as Mike Phillips and others keep reminding us, is to adopt a simple regimen and stick to it. So here's mine for my wife's DD:

                    (1) Wash every 1-2 weeks.

                    (2) Wax every 6 weeks (probably NXT).

                    (3) Clay, clean (I will probably use Cleaner Wax or ColorX), and wax every six months.

I think this will keep her car in good shape. My car, on the other hand, receives a bit more attention. She is, in the words of Gollum, "precious to me."

                    Cheers,
                    Al

I know what you're talking about (I think). Do they go TOTALLY away once the car is fully dry? If so, in my experience that is usually on neglected paint that is lacking proper oils and wax on the paint (either at the time, or in the past).

Generally, if you give the car a solid wash, clay, and then follow with something like Deep Crystal and then something like M66/D151 cleaner waxes you will be in much better shape and it should go away. (You may want to throw a serious glaze like a #7 into the mix for LOTS of oils).

It may also start to be less and less noticeable over time as you occasionally polish, and then wax the car. Either way- don't stress...especially since it goes away when it is dry!

                      Hope this helps!

Oh, and thanks for helping him out as well Akimel!

I will take notes of these step and record what I need to do each year. Thanks for all your help. I was wondering for my dashboard protection what do you guys recommend? I dont want it glossy but just something to protect it from cracking from the sun.

I think this should be in another forum, but I have a question on swirl remover. i have read alot about DISO in which dealer installs these swirls into your car. After waxing my car with NXT the swirl kind of fade away but it came back when it rained. I read that I need to polish my car to remove light swirls and I was thinking of the following two routine in which I am asking for you guys oppinion of which one would be better.

The first one is: Wash car, clay car, use colorx polish, and nxt wax

The second one is: wash car, clay car, Use crystal shine paint cleaner(Meguiar), pure polish, nxt wax.

                            My question

oops, I accidently posted the top post without finished it and my questions was that which one would be better for removing the swirls, the first routine or the second. Also I was wondering if the paint cleaner and pure polish remove light swirls? or those two products dont have anything to remove light swirls? and does colorx remove light swirls?
