  • What to use on window trim?

I'm afraid that the heat from the soap at the local coin op car wash may have ruined my window trim. I have tried to use a little bit of armor all to level out the finish but it does nothing.

The trim in its natural state is a black flat finish. As you can see from the pictures there are blotched shiny type patches along the top of the trim.

Any suggestions on what I can use?

    Hi evo77,

I think it's too far gone to restore to its original condition... You could try something like this though...

Gold Class Trim Detailer works pretty well on flat black paint, even though it's not specifically made for this surface.

But I've worked on trim like this and once it gets to this state there's not much you can do but improve it.

    Sorry...

Thanks Mike. I'll give the trim detailer a try. If not I guess I'll just have purchase some new trim.

Are you up to taping everything off and repainting it semi gloss? You could always get some faux carbon fiber adhesive film and cover the trim with that (mostly kidding)

some one on here did a repare on that type of window pillar, but I can't remember who. They did a great job with just some spray paint. taped off car, scochpadded the part and spray painted with flat black. I'll try to find the thread.

Do you guys think that maybe some real fine sandpaper might work?

Obviously I'd mask the painted area but perhaps I can sand it down to a even matte finish?

              Thoughts?

I'd wet sand and tape off the trim then rattlecan it. Be sure to tape off to avoid overspray on any other parts of the car. I might use a gloss black automotive finish.

                  trim fade

i would look closely @ trim some times its just a decal that you can get from the dealer i had a 1994 thunderbird and that was the case (a decal) so i just replaced it look good as new .....if it is a decal you can remove the old one with a heat gun / blow dryer set on hi heat

Nope, its not a sticker and unfortunately to replace both sides would cost me around $200.

I'd rather not paint it. If I did I'd use a fast drying flat black paint.

Maybe I'll take a stab at sanding a small section to see what it looks like.

I would look into getting some SEM TRIM BLACK and painting it. The trim black by SEM needs no primer and works great on wipers and trim. The most time consuming part of the project would be taping everything off. I have used the TB and had great results. Do a google search for "SEM AEROSOL PAINT" you should then be able to find the trim black. I *think* the part number is 39143.

Now that I look at it again, it reminds me of clearcoat failure. I think taping off and repainting (flat if you prefer) is your best option. Other than that you're left with buying new.

The trim is a hard type foam/rubber.
