  • Im overwhelmed.. Please help choosing a few products..

hello there and thanks in advance for the help. ive used the search option but am still puzzled and a bit overwhelmed at how many products meguiar's makes.

my goal is to start wetsanding my cars.... would really appreciate if somebody could outline EXACTLY what products id need from start to finish.

right now im using wetsanding with 1200, then 1500, then buffing with a polishing compound, and last use wax. results are genereally satisfying... but i know you guys can help me get even better results.

    please help. thanks.

Can you help us out by letting us know a little bit more about what you are doing?

What is it that you are wet sanding? What tools/polishers do you have at your disposal?

How much experience do you have with compounding/polishing paint?

Help us, so we can help you

Well, I'm glad we can help some

For starters, I will caution that wet sanding factory paint is extremely dangerous as the factory clear coats are VERY thing and do not allow for very much removal.

I would suggest getting some body panels from a junk yard or body shop to practice on, and also, if you will do this a lot you should get a paint thickness gauge. They are about $400~ for a quality unit, and sometimes more.

As for products, Meguiar's offers sandpaper that is extremely high quality known as "Unigrit." I would get several different cuts of that.

You will also want to get some Meguiar's #95 and M105 as they are heavy compounds intended to remove sanding marks. Play with them and see which you prefer.

After that, you may want to have some #83, #80, and #82 around for the final polishing steps.

That should be a good start...

**One final note, many of those products I listed will only work, or are MUCH better with a rotary polisher. I am guessing you got a DA polisher which will only work with some of the products, and is not a good tool for removing sand paper marks.

Probably should list what buffer you picked up. A DA would be safe but probably not effective enough. A rotary will open a another can of worms. It is tough for rookies to finish up with a flawless surface with just a rotary.
