  • Need some buffing advice, please.

Hey all, here is my 98 dodge intrepid, i'm wondering how to get my hood to look normal again (or at least close). My friend took an s.o.s pad to my hood (scratches aren't that deep at all) so i need to know what i will need in order to get this fixed... a buffer, what kind of compounds.. pads... thanks a lot

Your second image is a png file, you need to use a jpg for forums.

Can you get a jpg version?

        Wow!

That looks horrible! Let's hope your right that the scratches are not too deep. The clear layer of paint on most cars is thin, somewhere between 1 mil and 2 mils thick.

By machine, at a minimum you're going to need,

        G110 Dual Action Polisher
        M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish
        2-3 W-8006 Polishing pads

If you don't have much experience removing defects like this out of a modern clear coat finish, you may find out the scratches left by the SOS pad may bee deeper than you think and more difficult to remove than you may expect.

It could be it will require a rotary buffer to remove these scratches and possibly even some wet-sanding followed by some compounding with a rotary buffer.

You won't know until you actually bring some kind of swirl and scratch removing product down onto the paint and buff on the paint for about a minute.

Another way to tackle this would be to get some M105 Ultra Cut Compound and try to do it by hand. This is a unique compound that works really well by hand for serious defects in the paint.

I second 105 by hand. It is strong but still leaves a nice finish.
