  • Winter is coming

Winter is coming and I am dreading it!! I bought a new car this summer, 2002 Monte Carlo SS that happens to sit low to the ground. Doesn't make alot of sense when I live in South Dakota where it snows like heck but, I love the car so I will deal with it. I am putting in a remote start very soon.. I am also going to have a buddy help me buff and put a nice good clear coat on it.
In my search to find a old beater car to drive for the winter was uncompleted. I am forced to drive the monte for now.

People that get the nasty salt & sand from the roads, How often do you wash your car a week? In the town that I live in, there is only one car wash that drys it and everything before it comes out. The rest do not have blowers. So, when it gets cold out, The dutch boy car wash is the only one I can head too to get it washed without water frezzing over. That line is always 5 miles long as well too.

So, I am looking for advice to keep the car risk free this winter from the salt and everything that winter brings us?

    Suggestions or comments anyone

Try Optimum No Rinse, and use hot water, then you can wash it at home.

You're going to paint it? Or put a coat of wax on it?

Keep looking, better to have something you don't care about get wrecked in the winter snow than your baby...

I better clarify a little more in my write ups..

Goin to put a good coat of wax on it.

I live in an apartment, so washing it at home would be tough!

If I were to take it to a automatic car wash every week, would I need to get the highest dollar one with the wax.. or just get a hot soapy rinse?

Would the wax build up if I did the wax every week?

When it gets blow freezing and cold cold temps, I tend to not wash it because I am afraid it will freeze everything up

Taking your car to an automatic car wash once a week sounds like a recipe for swirled out finish... unless it's a touch-less car wash.

The wax or polymer (or whatever the ingredient left on the surface is), will be very thin and wear-off, so build-up would be the least of your worries.

              Re: Winter is coming

A couple of weeks ago I found this short article on winter washing of one's car. One can easily substitute Meguiar's products for the products listed. It's not clear to me what is different here about winter care from summer care. I am curious, though, about the suggestion, after washing the car, to mist the car, one panel at a time, immediately before drying. Why would one do this? Does the season matter?

Do they not know how cold it gets in the winter time?
Dipping your hands in water in the winter time *****!!

Thinking about it, I am not sure there is a touch-less car wash here in watertown or not. I will have to do some checking.. If there is, I will have to be ready to get out and dry as much as I can after!

Could check a coin-op place.... at least give it a low pressure rinsing often. Their soap would likely strip the wax though.

If thats the worse it can do, Wouldent that be better then not washing it all? Swirled finishes can be fixed after a good day of buffing.. Which should be done anyway
