Contrary to intuition, smaller and cheaper 6 inch buffer would do a better job than the 10 inch buffer that you have purchased but not yet used. Since it is still in the box, you should return it.

i went out and bought(yes turtle wax). I was excited and they didnt have the best meguiars selection at advanced or autozone. I got a rubbing compound, a polishing compound, color x and some cleaner wax.

People have posted pictures of the horrible results they've seen when using these types of products on clear coats. You can get away with them on single stage paints but that doesn't mean they're the best or even good product to use if your goal is to make the paint look good.

Oh and 2000 grit sandpaper and a buffer thingy.

So i decided to try and do the right half of the hood to see what would happen. It was sunny and the hood was warm so I was neglegent but did it anyway. I started off with a bottle of soapy water and some soaked 2000 grit as a wet sand. I think it was too fine of a grit being it clogged almost immediatly. but i finished.

Then i took and hand scrubbed/polished the rubbing compund on.

This is a pretty archaic way to approach trying to salvage old paint, it's too abrasive and will remove too much paint.

Wiped that off and followed with the polishing compund. Again wiped that off and treated with color x.

and let me know what you think. Also being metallic paint what do you suggest product wise to bring a slightly better luster?

Now that we know it is in fact a metallic finish, see my original posts to this thread... been there... done that... a whole bunch of times... thus the posts I typed up for you on Page One of this thread.

WOW! I learned something new today! Thanks Mike! I never knew about the matallic issue in the older SS paints. I always wondered why the pad turned black!

Good point about the buffer diameter, the available power applied is somewhat related to the size of the bonnet. I find that low power buffers cannot really operate close to a rated free rotating speed with a slight pressure applied.

Not saying that rpm does not matter, resistance to turning of a 10 inch to 6 inch (torque= force x radius). A 10 inch buffer "torque power" is 3/5 or .6 that of the 6 inch buffer with same rated amps (.65 amp).

I'd recommend a low cost 6 inch RO with speed about 3000 rpm and good bonnets over the 10 inch. Save the 10 inch for removing wax?

I give up for this one...I have no idea what i'm doing to this poor thing. I am probably going to save up and get a decent paint job. Then I guess I will worry about keeping the new paint looking good, or even reducing the orange peel depending on how much I save and where I take it.

Don't give up, you haven't even started.

Go back and read some of Mike's earlier posts, and try some of the recommendations. I am still learning too, but I took a bit of time to research products before I purchase them, and also picked up a training DVD. Why pay for a new paint job when you can spend a fraction to restore the paint yourself. You'd be surprised what you can accomplish on your own with the right products and techniques.

Hang in there and give yourself a chance to make that paint shine again!

Mike, showed me the light on my daughters ss Met. silver paint. Could not figure out what was happening until Mike cleared it up for me.
