  • Looks great after polish looks bad after wax

I have been having a problem waxing both my MB 560SLs. The first one is a black 1988 560SL and the second one is a red 1986 560SL. Both cars are a single stage no clear coat paint. They both look beautiful after claybar, Deep Crystal clean and polish. Once I put the wax on they tend to haze up. Gennerally its cleanable with quick detailer and alot of elbow grease but I cant seen to get the haze out of the red car. The red car looks very hazy in the shade but looks great in the sun. I have had this problem in the past with Meguires Gold Class past wax and last year I switched to Meguiars NXT generation Tech Wax. I like the NXT because of its durability but its still hazing on me.

I have also seen this happen to a proffesional detailer with my black car. When I went to pick up the car he was desperately rubbing it out and cursing at it because it had hazed up. I dont know what product the detailer was using.

    Thanks

Are you applying real thin applications? How long do you wait before removing the wax? Search on here for the "swipe test" that has been what I use before I remove any wax.

I think I started to realize what is going on. I started using thinner applications and got much better results. The trick seems to be not to conmtaminate adjacent areas with the wax you are removing. If you use too much wax it balls up when you remove it and gets into the adjacent areas as you rub it out. Iv not been too sure if Im removing too early or too late. I generally let it get to a dry appearance. The directions do say to do the whole car at once so I thought it was irrelevent. I will search for the swipe test and see how that works out next weekend. Thanks for the reply.

You want it to dry over the entire car before you start removing. Check a couple areas by swiping your finger or a cloth across the dried wax. When the wax is comppletly dry, it should swipe complelty clean with no smudges.

And if the wax is balling up on you, then it definatley sounds like a thick coat.

Here is a thread using a spray wax after a wash. The thickness of your coat of wax should be similar, if only a little thicker.

Meguiar's waxes are made to be removed quickly and effortlessly.
It sounds like you either applied to thick of a coating or you did not let it completely dry.

Try this, try using a mist product like Quik Detailer or any other or wash a panel of the car and apply a coat of wax to that panel but pay attention on the work you are doing, concentrate and be sure to put on a very thin coat covering all the area evenly with a circular motion

When done, allow the wax to dry. Read this link The Swipe Test, it should help out to tell you when the wax is ready to be removed.

Thanks for all the replies. The trick seemed to be mostly keeping the wax much thinner and more concentration on changing, shaking out and turning the wiper cloth. The problem appeares to be more presistent when doing the hood because there is more acerage involved and my tendancy was to remove the wax in to large a section without cleaning the cloth. Of course less wax helps too.

Just a thought ... the panels are not too hot, are they? I have had product "ball up" when applied to warm panels. Also, what kind of applicator are you using? I find the yellow foam applicators to be great for liquid and paste waxes, rather than a terry or microfibre pad.

Lovely cars, BTW ... let's see if we can get them to shine with the added protection of wax, eh?
