Xenon flashligts are upwards near $500 and have transformers etc.....
      Different type of bulb.

The expensive lamps you’re referring to are Xenon arc discharge lamps, which operate on a completely different principle. They require complex power supplies to initiate and maintain the arc.

The Brinkmann uses Xenon filled Tungsten filament incandescent lamps, which operate just like any other incandescent flashlight bulb.

I have always believed that the performance of the Brinkmann in highlighting defects has nothing to do with the bulbs being Xenon filled. (Well, very little. The Xenon allows a very small physical envelope and very small filament. But you get that with Krypton filled bulbs too. In theory you could have that with Nitrogen or Argon fill but those would give impractically short filament life.)

I believe that the Brinkmann’s superior optical characteristics are due to the bulb’s very small filament geometry combined with its speckled (semi-diffusive) reflector design. Together, they produce a very uniform spot pattern. The uniformity of illumination improves the visibility of physical inconsistencies (defects) in the surface being inspected.

Most flashlights are designed to throw out as much light as they can, with little thought given to pattern. So, most flashlights have relatively poor swirl finding performance.

LED’s are usually among the worst because they’re usually designed to get as much light out of them as possible and almost always choose to get more light over getting uniform light.

Other lights that work very well are 3M’s Sun Gun and Infratech’s CM5300 color matching lights, which use Halogen lamps with faceted reflectors (and cost waaaaaay more than the Brinkmann).

SurFire’s tactical flashlights, both incandescent and LED, are designed to produce extremely uniform spot patterns. Maybe they’ll also work well but I haven’t gotten to play with them for swirl finding yet.

Pep Boys does indeed carry them. I picked one up this afternoon.

              .
After reading about it on this forum I bought one at Wal-Mart for 19;95
I used once and put it up biggest waste of money in a long time.
I have two tripod lights each is 1000 watts halogen and they are far far better than the Binkmann.

I tested it today on my black THC while in the garage and it brings reveals every little scratch. It is doing the job I bought it for so I am happy with the investment.

Now if the backing plate would get here I could try out my new G110 DA.

Did you get the Brinkmann Maxfire or just a Brinkman spotlight ? I have a few halogens on tripods and the xeon shows micro maring a little better. I also like that its easier to grab and move about plus less heat output on a hot day.

PS - Got mine at PEP BOYS

YEP that is what I got,

I also don't like the fact that the battery is only good for a few minutes
I can see flaws just as well with the tripods heat is not a problem shop is air conditioned always cool.

I guess it is like they say different strokes for different folks,
IMO the Binkmann is not worth much while polishing I never use mine,
