  • Egg Attack

Not me but just want to know a solution.

What is the best solution to get rid of those eggs etched into the paint?

What should we apply on the paint surfaces to prevent egg etches?

If your car has been egged, you need to remove the egg splatter as fast as possible because something in the egg will tend to etch the paint.

If the egg was thrown at your car, then the impact of the egg against your finish will tend to instill a below surface imprint. The only way to remove below surface defects is to remove paint.

Any below surface imprint left by an egg thrown at your car will have to be removed in the same way you would remove a scratch or a bird etching and that is to remove paint and thereby level the upper surface with the lowest depth of the defect, whether the defect is a scratch, an etching or an imprint. The below diagram shows a variety of scratches in the paint from a horizontal view. As you can see, the scratch to the far right is too deep to safely remove.

What you can and cannot do when it comes to removing defects is always limited by the thickness of your paint, whether it's a basecoat/clear coat system, or a single-stage paint system. It's all about film-build, (pant thickness).

So far as I know, egged etches are serious attack to paint. They can etch deeply into the clear coat.

Shall we use Scratch X to remove the egged area?

Shall we put at least 2 coats of wax for extra protection in case we got hit?

Depends on how deep the etching is. I always say,

(This applies to any defect, not just scratches).

Two well-applied coats of wax will protect better than one coat of wax in most cases. The problem with an egg that has been thrown at your car is the impact of the egg, and probably the force of the egg shell hitting and breaking against your finish tends to cut into the paint. No amount of car wax is going to prevent egg shell under speed from cutting into your car's finish. This is especially true if you're driving at speed when the egg impacts.

Our Honda Pilot has an area that has been hit by and egg, some of the below surface cuts/impressions/etchings, look deep enough that they cannot be removed by hand or machine applied products. We keep it waxed and live with it.

Maybe a white color car may not look obvious in case attacked by eggs.

I guess it would also apply to yellow paint (just yoking with yah)

Why does it sound like you are expecting to get egged?? Have you been a bad boy?

I can attest to what Mike Phillips is talking about, I was working late one Mischief Night (night before Halloween) and some kids egged the building and my car. The shell chipped the paint down to the primer in little spots in the shape of the impact, and even tho the cops I called advised me to wash it right off, which I did, I missed some spots (it was dark) which have a mildly etched appearance like from bird poop. I'm glad I stuck to shaving cream (did I just admit to being a kid once?).

No No No!!! I never realise that eggs can be that powerful and harmful to the paint.
