  • Step 2 - Dewax?

    Hi All-

I've done a search for a good half hour or so, and I can't find the answer to my question, so I'll just post it here.. Thanks in advance.

I picked up my brand new car 6 weeks ago, and immediately proceeded to wax it (no polish). The surface is absolutely perfect, not a single bump or ripple, so I doubt very much it needs to be clayed or scrubbed.

I now want to use the 3-step system, but am not too happy about needing to use the scrub/claybar method first. The finish really is extremely good and I'd really rather skip this step due to my fear of abrasion and serious time spent fixing it up.

    My question is this :

Would a good wash, followed by a polish/wax be OK? I want to try out NXT wax, but my car is currently polished with the "Other" M brand's Carnauba wax. Will step-2 strip away this wax, or am I going about all this incorrectly?

I wouldn't be so concerned with going with a 2-step if my final step was another coat of carnauba, but it won't be in this case, as I want to give NXT a go.

    Thanks all - appreciate it.

(Oh, and here is the car in question, I know colour makes a difference in choices of steps/options etc!)..

good evening. step 2 polish will take the wax layer off and prepare paint for your new wax/sealant layer. Why not go ahead and try do polish and NXT. Put one coat NXT on and then as long as possible you could wait, (next day?)and apply a second coat. You'll notice it gives your red a different appearance, I think it shows brighter very eye catching. Especially the day AFTER you apply it. I like NXT a lot, but I found I prefer the carnaubas (Deep Crystal 3/ or #26) on my red. You can always try clay and cleaner (step 1) later. Once you do you'll be hooked because it keeps your car looking better than new. Love your pics. Is ther one of the whole car?

        Hi kryten2001,

        Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

I would just like to add a little to what denetc wrote,

Deep Crystal Polish (Step 2), is a pure polish, which is completely non-abrasive. It is not a paint cleaner, and not formulated to remove, or abrade anything from the finish. That said, rubbing a rich, oily product like the Deep Crystal Polish using either a foam applicator or a piece of terry cloth towel, can have a cleaning-effect, not a powerful cleaning effect, but a cleaning effect at some level while doing an outstanding job of polishing the paint to a high gloss.

If you really want to insure that your have removed any previous wax from the surface, Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner will provide better cleaning ability than the Deep Crystal Polish. Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner is a chemical cleaner only, non-abrasive and completely safe, while being effective for your car's finish.

I checked out the pictures in the link your provided above and it looks like you are starting with a true show car shine. This will be hard to improve upon, but think if anything can improve upon the results you have already created, then Meguiar's can do it.

I took the liberty of snagging one of the photo's of your car and uploading it into your gallery. Below is the picture, a link to your gallery and for you and anyone else who reads this thread, some links to some tutorials on working with images in the vbulletin environment

          question about cleaning

Hello Mike, i have a question...is there any kind of contaminant that the Quik Clay system won't remove that the DC-1 will?

i.e, if i clay the car with the Quik Clay system... do i have to still use a chemical cleaner like DC-1 or can i jump right to polish (DC-2) and wax (DC-3, Hi Tech or NXT)?

i'm talking about maintenance routine, it's a car that has been previously professional detailed, so now need only the sixth month maintenance .

Clay bars and the claying process removes above surface contaminants, liquid paint cleaners remove below surface contaminants. How much cleaning your car's finish needs depends on how much it has been exposed to outdoor environments. Typically, dirt and other contaminants build up in the microscopic surface imperfections that claying will not completely remove, so to be sure, it is important to periodically clean your car's paint using a dedicated paint cleaner to insure that your car's finish is as clean, and as clear as possible.

Here's an article I wrote that helps to explain how dirt builds up in a car's finish and the importance of a paint cleaner.

            A Lesson From White Paint

If your car is new, or like new, or has been previously cleaned and polished, and has seen little exposure to outdoor environments, then you probably don't need a paint cleaner and can either polish and then wax, or simply wax.

            Hope this helps...

Great looking ride. The NXT also has some mild cleaners that could help remove some of the old wax plus there is no telling how much of the original carnauba still remains on the surface.

                Good luck.
