  • Rock Chips? Long Trip Tomorrow, Need Advice

Okay, I plan on driving up to Sonoma tomorrow to go to Infineon Raceway, and of course, there's going to be an all out war of me vs the road. I JUST took delivery of my car, it has a new hood, bumper, and both front fenders, along with BRAND new paint, and I don't want rock chips! I was thinking of buying blue painters tape, how much do I need?

My front end looks just like that, I have the same hood and bumper. Also, up to where should I cover the car?

Last question, and most important one actually, would I have any problems with the blue painters tape on brand new paint? Like I said, I just took delivery of the car yesterday. My body shop said something about not putting anything on top of the paint so it can cure properly, something about releasing the solvents. Keep in mind that this tape is going on today, and coming off tonight. It might be a hot drive as well if that makes a difference. Thanks!

No wax. The wax will keep the solvents from releasing.

I don't think the paint would hurt, but at the same time, I don't think you'd get anymore rock chips than just driving it around. If you do decide to use tape, go with the green.

Don't leave the blue tape on too long and when you pull it off pull at an angle, not straight off.

There's also a less sticky painter's tape, it has an orange inner cardboard liner.

You should be okay, just use common sense. Don't pull the tape off when the paint is cold either.

Twere me, I'd rent a car and let the paint get a little bit harder. Having never tried a tape "bra", I can't see how much additional protection it would provide....paper isn't very tough and anything that would hit hard enough to crack paint would seem unlikely to be phased by a paper barrier. Since your painter said not to put "anything" on the surface, if something bad should happen while removing the tape, he may tell you it's your problem.

        Just my cheery paranoid view.

Since your painter said nothing on the paint. I would be leery about even the painters tape. Maybe you could give him a call and ask him. This way if he says the tape is alright to use you have a little wedge in the door if something happens to the paint.

I've seen a number of people come to our Saturday class with blue tape bras on their cars in preparation to drive to Las Vegas from the SoCal area...

The 1-15 to Barstow and on to Vegas is very windy and driving there can be like having the front of your car sand blasted....

            Ouch...

Well, I drove carefully, and I raced the car at the drag races, I had a blast! I have NO rock chips, but it is full of bugs and dust . What would you guys recommend to clean them off, keeping in mind it's brand new paint?

Just and good bath...I like Gold Class. If the bugs are stuck more than a good wah will remove then a little shot of a QD product might be in order. On new paint, rather than going to anything harsher, I think I'd clay the bugs if all else failed and use a LOT of QD in the process (and probably quite a bit of clay as well). Clay for bugs is something I've never tried....that's kinda of a WAG. I don't allow my car to get hit by bugs.

Not too bad, considering I made 4 passes, then I beat my first two opponents in bracket racing, and finally lost the third. My best pass was a 14.498 @ 97.87 MPH with a 60' time of 2.224.
