  • General question..

Today I was doing a 2006 BMW 530xi and after examining the paint, I determined I was going to do the following...

    Wash with GC
    Clay
    D151 with G110
    NXT 2.0

Everything was going along amazing and I kept pulling the car out of my tiny garage and into the sun to examine the swirls and the D151 was working quite well. However, there was one spot in the center of the hood that had some scratches (not swirls). I have NO pics, but they did not have depth (your couldn't feel them) and you could ONLY see them when you would look at the car a particular angle (almost horizontal). Because the car was white, you could NOT see the scratches straight on.

I made a few passes with 151 and an 8006 pad and nothing. I decided to bump it up to #83 (new 8006) and try a few passes. Again nothing.

Finally, I went up to #105 and 2 passes and NADA. I then tried one pass with #105 by hand (thinking I could give it more passion). Didn't do a thing to the scratches. No improvement at all. I used an 8006 at speed setting 5. I did NOT want to try a 7006 pad, so I just gave up.

So, my question is this... considering the tools I own (G110, #80, #83, #105, #151, 8006, 7006, 9006), what could I have tried, or was this one of those things that was just beyond my tools? (ie: was I in rotary territory?)

I wasn't too bothered by it, because the car was white... but I sure would've liked to fix it. Any thoughts?

Just to note... yesterday when you posted this it was a day off for most of us... and it's still not even 9:00am on the west coast, (Where I am), on Tuesday morning.

If what you've tried so far hasn't removed or improved the scratches then in case like these, instead of buffing and buffing and buffing the area it's usually safer to carefully wet-sand these RIDS i.e. Random Isolated Deeper Scratches until they are flat with the finish and the use a rotary buffer to remove your sanding marks.

This of course is a risky procedure that will leave the paint thinner where you sand and buff so it might be one of those times where it's better to learn to live with the defects versus remove them.

Always a judgment call you your part as well as tempered by your skills and abilities to do this kind of advanced correction procedure.

I did a truck this weekend that had tons of marks on the hood. I couldn't affect them at all. I came to the conclusion after talking to the owner that the hood was recleared. I guess all the marks where under the new layer of clear coat. The rest of the truck turned out great.

I sort of doubt that's what it was but maybe. Never know I guess.

              Re: General question..

              Guys,

Thanks for the tips and I think this was definitely in the RIDS spectrum and probably beyond my skill for removal (don't want to get into wet sanding or even using a rotary). I'm happy to do what I can with my G110.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on something more I could have done.

              Thanks again.

When it becomes more available, you may want to try out the new W7207 Cutting pad and M83. If that doesn't work, you've pretty much maxed out the capabilities of the G110.
