  • freshly painted car &wetsanding-polishing question

The Civic just been resprayed with some nice shine layers of clear coat but with some orange peel on it..
The painter told me that he will wet sand it tomorrow with 3M 1500 sandpaper and he will use compound to polish it...
1)Is that a good idea for a freshly painted car??
2)If it is not a good idea, what possible problems may cause to clear??(i told to the painter not to do it now but i cannot change his mind)
3)Of course i will need to polish it with a finer polish to remove the holograms and light swirls from compounding, and wax the car...Does it matter what kind of wax i am going to use??

    Thanks

Re: freshly painted car &wetsanding-polishing question

What your painter is going to do is the "basic" method of sanding and cutting fresh paint.

There are better ways and better products but it doesn't sound like you're going to have the time or the ability to get him to learn a new system.

If he finishes with 1500 grit he's going to have to use a real aggressive compound to remove the sanding marks.

In the end you'll likely have tracers and swirls to remove. Tracers are real difficult to remove but you can probably re-polish the paint and remove the swirls.

Tracers are random, deeper scratches left in the paint due to larger particle size of the abrasives used to make the paper and/or un-even pressure, and/or any kind of dirt or abrasive particle that gets trapped between the paper and your car's paint.

It's a common problem, at our advanced classes we show people how to flush the surface with a fresh supply of water to keep the sanding area clean and we also show how to use our Nikken brand 'Finishing Papers" which use Unigrit Technology which helps to reduce tracers.

    Best of luck to you...

When working on fresh paint, you can safely apply ANY of our pure polishes including our Deep Crystal Polish in our Consumer Line and they will have no negative effect on the paint curing and outgassing process.

        That would be,

        M03 Machine Glaze
        M05 New Car Glaze
        M07 Show Car Glaze
        M81 Hand Polish
        Deep Crystal Polish

Remind us again what tools, pads and products you have?

What you really want to do is to machine polish with a cleaner/polish like M80 with a DA Polisher and a W-8006 polishing pad or something similar.

This is assuming your painter doesn't finish with a DA Polisher.

He will not finish with a DA but he will do one step compounding to remove the sanding marks.
I have know (Meguiar's products) #80, #83, #7, Deep Crystal Polish, Deep Crystal cleaner, 8006 polishing pads,Gold class liquid wax, NXT 2.O wax.I have also some others brand products but i don't know if it is OK to post them.I will polish it with a DA polisher.

Re: freshly painted car &wetsanding-polishing question

If you're lucky, and his swirls are not too deep, then either the M80 or the M83 should remove the swirls he leaves in the paint.
