  • Tips for using M105 and D151 with the DA Polisher?

I should be getting my samples of M105 and D151 today from ADS. I plan on using them both on my truck this weekend to see how well they work. I am looking for some tips on which pads to use with each product and how to apply them using the DA polisher.

I figure M105 would be like M83 or M80, use a 8006 pad apply and remove before it dries, but what about the D151.

Should I use the 8006 pad? And should I let it dry them wipe it off? Any other advice would be great too.

    Thanks

Re: Tips for using M105 and D151 with the DA Polisher?

Hi and welcome to Meguiar's Online!

M105 could be worked with the W8006 pad on Speed Setting 5, it could because since it's not recommended by Meguiar's, the results with M105 on the DA can change. It will remove the defects so you can follow it by using a product like M80 and it should turn out great.

M135 is a mist and wipe product, do not use this product with the DA. The way of using it is that you mist the product directly on the paint and with a microfiber towel spread the product, flip the towel and remove the residue until the finish and clear and shiny

Remember that M135 is not a wax, it's a mist and wipe product with the new Hydrophobic Technology but it's not a wax. So when you work and experiment with M105 remember to follow with M80 to get a nice and polished finish and follow with a wax of choice.

anyway...you are refering to D151 - Paint Reconditioning Cream right?

If yes then try different combination of pads. I have tried with all 3 of the new 2.0 pads. It again depends on the paint that you are working with. If yellow is not working enough for your liking then bump it anotch to a maroon pad. And yes, you need to let it dry as to ensure the wax properly adhere. Look around for Mr Tim Lingor's post on D151. Its indeed a great reference point to read upon.

Re: Tips for using M105 and D151 with the DA Polisher?

          Just to point out...

Meguiar's does not have an official recommendation for using M105 Ultra Cut Compound with a DA Polisher at this time.

That said, many people have had great results using M105 with DA Polishers including myself. Here are some basic common sense tips to help insure you'll be successful.

Important Note: Always work clean. Before starting, clean your work area and wash and dry the vehicle. (This is working clean, it includes a clean car and a clean, well-lit work area).

          First: Do a Test Spot
Whatever car it is you're working on, whatever the product and process you decide to use, before going over the entire car test out your product and process, (process means by hand or machine and the application material used with either of these two options), on a small area from beginning to end and then inspect your results. This is called a "Test Spot".

Next, inspect the paint to see if it needs to be clayed and if it does then clay the paint using detailing clay.

Next, inspect the paint for swirls and scratches, if you're going to share your project on this forum or any forum get your "Before Pictures" now. You can't go back and get them after you buff out the car, so read the below how to articles and get your before shots ahead of time.

How to capture pictures of swirls in your car's paint
Tips for how to correctly take pictures to document an Extreme Makeover

Now you're ready to do a test spot. You can tape off a small section about a foot squared or so, or do it without taping off a section just pick an area to work on and stay inside this area. Taping off a section is mostly for capturing very exact before and after results.

Now to this small section, apply and work your first step product. In this case it would be the M105 with probably a W-8006 Polishing Pad on your DA Polisher on the 5.0 Speed Setting. If this is the case, (or whatever your pad and tool might be), work the area and then wipe off the residue and inspect the results. If they look great move on to the next step, in some cases for deeper swirls and scratches it might require a second or even third application depending upon your paint, the depth of the defects, your skill level at using the machine and of course your goals.

After you have the defects removed to your satisfaction, it's best to inspect the results in as many kinds of light as you have at your disposal, this could include bright sunlight, a swirl finder light, florescent lights and halogen lights. All are these are common knowledge to online enthusiasts as they are frequently discussed and easily available and affordable. Make sure you're happy with this first step.

          Second Polishing Step
In some cases you may need a second polishing step to take your paint to a higher level by removing micro-marring or maximizing clarity, depth and gloss. In some cases you can go straight to wax. If you think you need a second polishing step then repeat the process above only switch to a clean, dedicated polishing pad or finishing pad and your choice of second step product, this would typically be a less aggressive cleaner/polish or a cleaner/wax.

After applying, working the product and wiping off the residue, again inspect the results. For most people, at this pint of the test spot, if everything is going good, your results should look good and you should be ready to apply wax. If the results don't look good it's probably a pretty good idea to come back to this forum and post a thread with what you're seeing and ask for direction.

If the results look good, then apply your last step product or LSP. If this is a wax or paint sealant, then follow the manufactures directions for using the product. If this is a Meguiar's wax or paint sealant then we recommend applying a thin coating and allowing to completely dry before removing it.

Again, inspect your results in multiple kinds of light. This is your end-result. Many people look at the paint after the first or second step and expect show car results and while that is the goal, the true end-result is AFTER you apply your LSP.

If the results look good and you're happy then go to town on the rest of the car repeating the successful process you used for your test spot. If your end-results are not meeting your goals then post what your seeing to the forum and our community of experienced forum members will do their best to see you through to success.

Specific Tips for using M105 with a DA Polisher
Here's some specific tips for using M105 with a DA Polisher, they are the basic, common sense tips you should be using with any correction product applied with a foam pad on a DA Polisher.

Clean your pad often - use the Cleaning Your Pad On The Fly technique.

Clean your pad with a plastic brush, like a medium or hard bristle toothbrush or something similar.
You'll find out that over time, (over time would mean after a few applications of product), you'll see a build-up of dried product on the outside edges of the foam pad that doesn't come off easily when using the Clean your pad on the fly technique. So take a moment to take a plastic brush and brush off the built-up residue from the edges of the pad and even the face of the pad if needed. It's important to always work clean no matter what product you're using and especially when using M105 with a DA Polisher as you will see a build-up of dried product on the outer edge and face of your foam pad.

Always wipe your paint surface clean after working a section. This is also part of working clean. Don't work on leftover residue on the paint, this residue is a mixture of spent product and removed paint, so wipe your panel clean after working a section so you are always working on a clean surface with fresh product.

Note: When working on a single stage paint it's pretty easy to see removed paint because it is a color. When working on a clear coat finish you're still going to have removed paint on your pads except you can't really see it because it's clear. What's important to understand is that anytime your doing paint correction you're removing paint and if you're working on a clear coat finish you're eyes cannot see the removed particle of clear paint but they are there just the same.

          Make sense?

I'm sure others will chime in with their tips, but these are the basics. Majoring on the basics is primary for success, fine-tuning the little things will just make your results even better but the basics come first.

Hope this helps... keep us updated as to your success.

                  What is D151?

I go to meguiarsdirect and type it in the search box and get: "Sorry the item you are searching for cannot be found."

Tried the * wildcard on both ends and nothing. Meguiar's really needs to fix this problem. When people use the popular type names for products on the forum, i.e. D151 or M105, and you can't find them on meguiarsdirect to get a description of what the product is and what is it's purpose is it really makes it hard to determine if it is a product I might need now or in the future. I can't buy it if I don't know what it is.

Is it also possible to use #84 and #85 that way with a DA-polisher or does it only work with #105 ?

How much faster are you by using this "non-DA-compounds" than working with #83 which is especially for DA-use ?

                        Thanks !

No. Both M84 and M85 are for use with a rotary buffer only. It takes the power of a rotary buffer to effectively work the abrasives to accomplish the task.

At this time, the most aggressive product we have for use with a DA type polisher is our our D151 or M83, these are about the same level of aggressiveness but use different abrasive technologies. D151 is a cleaner/wax for production detailers and M83 is our most aggressive cleaner/polish.
