  • Random Detailing Thoughts and Product Comparisons

I've been out of commission for quite some time with a bad back, but I finally started gettin back into the swing of things over the past week or so and I had some PURELY personal opinions on some products and a few comparisons.

Okay... over the last few weeks I've either purchased or swapped for the following products...#80, #83, #105, #151, GC Shampoo, Microfiber Shag Weave Towel, Meg's Water Magnet (and a few more goodies).

I wanted to offer some opinions to non-pro newbies or even people who haven't really tried any of the "less available" products (not OTC).

    First off is #80...

I've been using it for months now, but today was the first time I've EVER seen it REALLY work. Here's why... friend came over today with this blue Mitsubishi Eclipse which is COVERED in swirls (worst I've ever worked on). We did not have time to do a full correction, but we used #80, #83, #105.

I was using my G110 with an 8006 pad at speed setting 5. Each product worked, but 105 was just unbelievable. Yes #80 worked and removed the swirls, but it needed multiple passes. Even #83 needed at least two or three passes, but NOT 105. One pass per panel and bingo, ALL swirls GONE. Yes, my friend was amazed, but I was even more amazed. I've been reading a lot of "hype" about 105 and I'm not the type to believe ANYTHING until I try it myself, so, IMHO you can believe the hype about 105. After 105 took out all the swirls on the front driver quarter panel, I finished with a quick pass of #80, followed by #7 and then NXT 2.0. My friend was blown away.

We've scheduled a FULL correction at his house next Sunday and I'll be taking a lot of pics. Stay tuned because this thing is in really bad shape!

Next... GC Shampoo vs. NXT Car Wash.

I know many swear by GC Shampoo and I also LIKE it, but to me, NXT blows it away. I don't think it is even close (if I'm being honest). Not trying to flame, just giving my honest opinion. I've got to containers left, but once I'm done, I'll be back to NXT. To me NXT just lubricates better. Again, simply my opinion.

Water magnet -> When I first got it I didn't really like it because I didn't find it picked up as well as my Chamois or even an Autozone Water towel I picked up. However, after talking with Blue Zero (Scott), he told me to wash it with a vinegar rinse and I found that made a HUGE difference. I love it now. It is my drying towel of choice.

So, in the event someone is having drying issues with their WM, give it a try and see what happens. I did it once (and once only) and have never looked back.

Microfiber Shag Weave Towel -> This is non-Meg's product that I recently purchased with another MOL member and I really must say these are the best MF's I've ever used. They're not perfect (because it appears some of the fibers separate), but in terms of being plush, soft and luxurious these things are OFF the charts (another problem is they're kind of small, but still worth it 12 x 16).

M39 is disgusting it is so good.

M40 is good, but not as good as HD (IMHO)

I don't like using MF to clean windows because I get residue left over, anyone else?

Meg's APC continues to blow away Simply Green (even when I concentrated SG stronger than Megs APC).

Lexol Cleaner in Conditioner is VERY disappointing.

If I think of more, I'll add it later.

What do you mean by leftover residue on windows? Residue from the towel itself ie fiber? Or residue from either gunk buildup or the window cleaning product?

      3Fitty,

Try the glass microfiber towels from ads. IMHO they are great. I spent a lot of time and effort finding a towel that worked well for me. These are great.

Yeah I recommend using a glass MF to people. They seem to work better then "normal" MF's. I've used regular MF's on glass for years with little to no problems but the glass ones seem to wipe away the cleaner and "gunk" a little quicker and cleaner the first swipe.

Yes, the fibers from the MF towels (and I've tried many).

Kevin Brown (yes you've seen his work) uses 100% terry cloths to wash windows and I tried them and found they work splendid. I did use the cheapo Costco, towels and you do need to wash and dry them to get the loose lint off of them, several times. I also use a lot of towels, say one each for front and rear window and probably 1 towel for each of the side windows (in and out). I tried to stretch the towel for all side windows but wasn't working and heck, I have a ton.

I don't think anyone will "flame" you for your opinion.

            What does Mike say?

"FIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE AND USE IT OFTEN"

As far as the rest, I like NXT, it seems to be a stronger soap than GC, I use it in the winter.

I used M105 on our metal trim, great stuff.

            Haven't tried M39 yet, I love M40

APC is great stuff, just get extra for the wife once she discovers it's power.

I use Supreme Shine MF towels to dry my car only. After running full water on the car, less to dry.

I used to use and love Lexol, but found that GC leather is great stuff.

And....Meguiar's products don't need a lot of product to use. So...if you think you paid a lot for product, you don't have to use a lot and it's superior to others so, are you really loosing money?

For glass, the only thing that has come close to working for me is the Auto Detailing Solutions glass towels.

I have those too, but when I drive into the sun, I can still see lint. It's probably just a different thing works best for different people and cars though.

                      Otherwise, good towels!!!

I just tried every traditional microfiber out there and washed them separately, but nothing came close to the ADS ones, for me.

Happy it worked out for you. I just got some microfiber wash to test out too. I know most people say just to use regular laundry soap but I wanted to give it a try.
