  • Please Help! Painted Pinstripe removed but still some color. Pics inside

I just bought this car and it had free hand painted pinstripe on it. I got all the pinstriping off but on some of the strip that was red it looks like it blead thru the paint. Here are some pictures.
Thanks in advance for the help...

What have you used to get it this far? It could be that you've reached the "best it's gonna get" stage.

I used easy off oven cleaner and a Q-tip to lift off the stripe. Then cold water rinse. I tried buffing the mirror in the pic with some pretty gritty stuff but no luck. It seems the paint on the mirror is thinner and less clearcoat then the rest of the body.

I would think something like M105 with a terry towel by hand would take it off or even some scratch X?

I read about that M105 last night. I may have to stop off after work and get some.

What ever you do you have to remove the stained paint. I think 105 is like 1500 sand paper so it will work. I would wet sand it but, the paint might be really thin on the mirror. You don't have much depth there so, be careful.

I have some 2000 grit paper. Do you think I shoud do the wetsand? or try M105 or Scratch X? Whats recommened after wetsanding or M105 use?

Well I wouldn't jump into wet sanding if you haven't been tought. It's not hard to do, but you can screw up you paint (I have). I would start off with 105 by hand so you have less chance of going through the paint. If you do go through the paint, re-painting shouldn't be that big of a problem due to the fact it's only the mirrors.

There is some on the hood and door as well. Its not half as bad as the mirrors. I have wet sanded a few times.

Though M105 is probably going to be your best bet, it's unlikely you'll find it at your local auto parts type store. More readily available is going to be ScratchX. You'll just have to work at it harder but that'd be your next best step.

M105 is $30.00 a quart and only available at a PBE store or online, you're not going to find it at Autozone or Pep Boys.

Here's an inexpensive test you can do, stop by Autozone or Pep Boys and pick up a tube of ScratchX and apply and work it over only a small portion of the stained line and see if you can fix a small area. If you can then you can have the confidence that you can remove all the staining, if you can't do it with ScratchX then "maybe" it can be done with M105 and you can seek some out and try it.

The stain is probably both topical and penetrated into the paint, so removing it is a matter of removing enough paint and that's where it can get risky.

Test with a tube of ScratchX first and see what you can do. Don't get into wet-sanding if you don't know how to wet-sand and certainly not until you've tested with a quality paint cleaner first.
