  • Anyone drive a Nissan?

I just bought a dark red 2006 Altima that I'm going to to a full compound and polish on and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to use, based on their experience with paint hardness. I will still do a test spot, but I would like to start with an idea of what people have gotten to work.

I have already done rotary with #84/7006, #83/8006 and #80/8006 topped with #21 Synthetic Sealant in an area that had really bad scratches and it seemed to turn out pretty nice.

I bought this car off-lease and because of some cosmetic issues I got a great deal on it. the headliner is a mess with what looks like pop can spray all over. The Altima has cloth armrests... they're comfy, but boy do they hold soil! Some APC and a Meguiars terry cloth got most of that out. The previous detailer also scuffed the rubber trim with their rotary and left wax everywhere, including the washer fluid sprayers, on the trim and any crevice you can think of. Trim Detailer worked a miracle with the trim!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I had one of those generation Altimas, but I don't do that serious machine work like you, so I can't really offer suggestion.

However, it's a very nice car. Enjoy.

this is easily the best car I've ever owned. It's the 3.5 SE with a 5-speed manual. I've read it can go 0-60 in 5.9 seconds! I never knew it was possible to have a family sedan that was comfortable on long trips, got excellent gas mileage (29 hwy, 27 commuting so far) was CRAZY fast bone stock, and looked as good as it drives.

I wish I had time to do full before and after pics because for having 37k on the odometer, it has many issues to address. One is that the paint feels like sandpaper- I'm guessing it's rail dust because in the two years in between clayings on my Impala, it was still relatively glassy.

Congratulation on your "new to you" Nissan. The Altima is a nice car, with great power and reliability. I am not sure of paint hardness on the newer Nissans, but my 1993 and 1995 Nissans were really easy to detail. Doing a test panel is the best advice I can give you, hopefully some full-time detailers can chime in.

            Re: Anyone drive a Nissan?

I've got more than half of the car done now. I've had to do it in pieces for three days now and still have the whole right side and front bumper left! It took forever to clay the back bumper, as it was reminiscent of 220 grit sandpaper AFTER I washed it!

i adjusted my process a bit:

            mild clay/Last Touch
            rotary/#84/7006 pad
            rotary/#83/8006 pad
            rotary/#82/9006 pad
            DA/NXT 2.0 x 2 passes
            ...
            grin ear to ear!!!

Either the paint is really hard, or all the defects I was working on were deeper than your average swirls and RIDS. I took out #80 and put in #82 because it seemed like I was getting a nice finish with #83, and I just wanted to use #82 to minimize holograms. Pulling it out in the sun, #82 holograms were BARELY noticeable, but #80 holograms were very light but more noticeable than with #82.

Why not finish with DA and #82, you might ask? After four years of trying everything under then sun to get the results I want with the DA, I still can't avoid micro-marring. I tried DA/#82/9006 and looked real close and could see the scratches and could see the clarity of the reflections wasn't quite as good. Very, very close, but not as good.

I keep my cars waxed often enough where I never see the holograms anyway. It's worth my time to have the speed of the rotary. Having a 14-month-old changes things in the time department!

I hope to have pics up when I finally finish it. I can't stop staring at it! (the part that I have done)

              Re: Anyone drive a Nissan?

i had a 2002 frontier and now a 2007 sentra and 2009 murano and from what i can tell.... nissan paint is pretty easy to work with

83 with a 8006 pad on a G100 took care of most of the scratchs and swirls with no problem

most of the time i just use 80 with 8006 pad on G100 to do maintainance and one pass is good enough to take out all the real minor swirls

                Re: Anyone drive a Nissan?

Interesting... When I bought the car threee weeks ago, the paint looked like **** from the contracted detailer, but I had some touch-up work done and a bumper repainted, and I bet the body shop buffed it again, because the swirls were mostly gone. It didn't look half bad, but a lot of RIDS and deep swirls were still remaining, plus some scratches on the roof from the idiot who leased it dragging things off the roof. I think I got most of that out, thankfully; I thought the scratches were deeper. #84 x 2-3 passes got it out, which is as far as I'm willing to with such a low mileage car.

Sounds like the paint is a little softer than I thought, then. benhui86- I'm glad you can get the G100 to work well. I get micro-marring no matter what I do.

I will likely maintain with rotary/#80/8006 and rotary/#82/9006 with $83 saved for "stubborn" areas.
