  • New to detailing

    Hey everybody,

I just purchased a (bright) red 2008 Ford F-150. I've only washed my previous vehicles a couple of times a year and if I felt like it I'd wax it. This is my first brand new vehicle and it gave me the bug to try to take care of it and keep it clean. I'm new to detailing and until this point had never heard of a clay bar. After washing my truck I ran my hand across the hood and it still felt sandy or dirty. After doing some research on the Meguiar's website I've come to the conclusion that I need to wash the truck, use a clay bar with the lubrication to get rid of the sandy or dirty feeling then maybe use the Hi-Tech Yellow Wax to finish it off.

This truck came with the chrome package. Chrome bumbers, exhaust tipe and chrome aluminum rims. Any suggestions on keeping those clean and shinny would be nice. One last thing.....the black plastic on the exterior around the doors over time (on the Fords that I've seen in the past) will dull and get kind of greyish looking. I would like to prevent that as much as possible from happening and any suggestions would help. Thanks - Chris.

    Re: New to detailing

For fading black plastics I would recommend Black Wow. I've used Mother's Back to Black before and it doesn't last at all. So far BW does last in my experience. Its a little expensive but once the applicator gets saturated enough you wont even have to add anymore since it doesn't really dry on there

Meguiars make a exterior trim detailer. The clay kit is great because it comes with two clay bars and QD quik detailer that last a long time. Your wheels are probably poilished aluminum. NXT metal polish works great. Do you want to clean the paint to get rid of any cobwebbing or swrils? if you do I use DC1 cleaner I have had great rsults with this cleaner. and for polish I use the DC2 or #7. I would also recommened you to look into getting NXT 2.0 wax. It has a deep wet shine. I have not used 26 before so I am not sure of the results are.
      5 step system

      1)wash
      2)clean
      3)polish
      4)wax (protect)
      5)maintain

Thanks for your input guys, I will definately keep these porducts in mind.

As far as the Black Wow is concerned, does it leave a slippery surface like Armor All. I would like to put it on the rear bumper which the top part is made of black plastic, but I don't want to slip while climbing into the bed of the truck.

Welcome, 03mach1 already mentioned the steps. Walmart has Meg Gold CLass shampoo, Meg Ultimate Quick Detailer, Meg NXT 2.0 and Meg Smooth Clay kit (awesome deal). Also get some of the cheap Micorfiber towels and terry towels there, I use these for door jams, wheels and interior. Kmart has Viking MF towels gets a few of the big yellow ones for drying and the Green ones to used with Meg Ultimate Quick detailer.
Google search Black WOW there is LOTS of info. It seems like a GREAT product but needs to put on just as the directions say. Too much and it will not be a good thing.

Depends. I've wiped it off thoroughly multiple times and it lessens the slippery surface effect. I've got it down just to look great and no slip. Took some practice on my part though. This was on the plastic on the rear bumper of the RX330
