  • Clear coat buffing

    Hey Guy's
I am repainting a motorcycle tank and I am somewhat new at this. Most of what I know I learned here. My question is - Do I sand the FINAL coat of clear or do I just buff it? Also, what product do you recomend for the final buff? I know I need something with no abrasives but what do you recomend? Thanks - Mike - By the way. I am using a spray on urethane clear coat.

What is your process, spray or roll on? 1)Wet sand the clear if it has orange peel. (if no orange peel go to step 2. 2)Then use a polishing compound (not rubbing compound) preferably with a wool pad to buff to a high gloss. Do not wax for at least 2-3 months? You can apply a polish (pure polish) at any time but the paint will need time to degas for at least 2-3 months. (so no wax for that period)

What kind of paint finish are you using?

Also depends on your priming and blocking out of primer and sanding grit you sanded the primer.

Then it depends on what was already said, the lack of orange peel and any sllight defects (if any)

If you are using aerosol your most likely option is lacquer clear coat and top coat, aerosol enamels usually do not harden enough to polish.

      1. spray a narrow cut in coat about 2-3" wide- like to the hard to spray areas and the edges and then
      2. go to your wider spray pattern like 5-6 inches.

do not try one heavy wet coat- two coats minmum

      painting is 90% prep/details 10 % spray

I'll let some else take it from here
