  • Cleaning/Wax Wheels

I have a set of Forged Wheels, i think they're made from alluminum, and have been using GCAWC on them.

THey seem to clean them well, but w/my brakes, the brake dust is ridiculous. I heard that waxing your wheels will help make them easier to clean and help to repel the brake dust on my wheels, any truth to this?

Can i use regular car wax? (nxt or gc, i have both) ?

    Re: Cleaning/Wax Wheels

Well, I wasn't "thrilled" with the results of NXT 2.0 on my wheels until I tried Poor Boy's World Wheel Sealant, which is supposed to be specifically for wheels and brake dust.

Long story short, the NXT was MUCH better on my wheels than the PB's Wheel Sealant.

Not only did it work better, but it was much better to put on and take off. I'd go with NXT if I was you (that is what I continue to use).

NXT 2.0 is the best on paint that I've seen, and one wheels

after you've given the car a good cleaning, if there's a clearcoat you may also want to use a paint polish on them before wax

they will help repel brake dust...somewhat, alot of it also depends on your car, the condition of the brakes, and pads; and your driving. some wheels get disgusting, others only get a light coat of dust

        Re: Cleaning/Wax Wheels

The problem with waxing wheels, whether you're using a wax or a paint sealant, is that follow-up washing with a wheel cleaner will tend to remove the wax or paint sealant. Now you're back to where you started.

It's a tough problem to solve permanently.

dang ... so after each wash we would need to reapply the wax/sealent to them. Unless we just wash them w/soap & water i'm assuming?

Would i follow the same procedures as the car? apply by hand wipe off and wait then do a 2nd coat? :-x

Whenever I wax my car it is standard procedure to wax the rims. In between when I qd the car I use Quik wheel cleaner to clean the rims. This method seems to hold up between waxes for me.

What about the Quik Wheel Detailer? Will that remove wax?

Anyone know? I wax my wheels with NXT 2.0 and now that I have in my possession a shiny new bottle of Quik Wheel Detailer (from the survey gift), I'm anxious to try it out for the first time.

So will it remove the wax?

Or is it like QD/UQD for wheels? Meaning it cleans and enhances like QD & UQD does for the wax on the surface of the car. Except it's for wheels. Am I making sense or am I making this harder than it needs to be?

The answer is after you wax them wash them with car soap try it.

I find that after you use a sealant on wheels then the following week when you wash the car all you have to do is spray the wheels and use the left over car soap from the wash bucket. I have been using NXT spray wax on my wheels

I rarely use a wheel cleaner anymore. After I cleaned them up one and waxed or use chrome polish, I am able to maintain them with just soap and water. I use a brush on the tires and clean the wheels with a microfiber type wash mitt. This way if you wax them the wax is not removed and less risk of damaging the wheels.

Today I used the quik wheel cleaner again. (Survey Gift). I do not believe there has been any compromising of the #21 on my rims. It cleaned up actually easier then with just using Last touch. Just my opinion.

                            Re: Cleaning/Wax Wheels

I usually just use soap and water on the wheels. I have never used wax on them. I also just recieved the survey kit and used the wheel detailer. Seems like it gave the wheels a little bit more of a shine. Just my opinion. If the brake dust is really that bad you might want to change the brake pads. They have pads that have minimal bake dust. It's usually the more expensive pads.

My gut tells me that quick wheel detailer is a very gentle cleaner that will not remove the wax. I used it on my car last week and loved the results.
