  • How do I treat touch up paint dabs with the g110?

The G110 is on the way from ADS along with all the extras. While I'm waiting, thought I'd ask about how to treat several dabs of touch up paint on a black C5 'vette. Care wasn't taken during application so the dabs extend past the chip on most places, but each chip is completely covered with the touchup paint. The color is black but seems lighter than original.

Do I need to treat those spots differently than the rest of the car? Perhaps a little m105 by hand or d/a to smooth the dabs out a bit before polishing and wax?

I ordered the instructional DVD also. Perhaps this is addressed there.

    All suggestions appreciated.

I saw write ups regarding touch up painting. In a nutshell, apply touchup paint (one layer), wetsand flat (if above the chip) or if lower than the chip, apply another coat until filled, wetsand, cut and polish. Seen it on a white Ford Ranger where the owner filled the crack with several coats of touchup paint then wetsanded and polished.

I would say if they are above the chip itself, you could carefully wetsand the spot then polish it back with M105 or other polish (starting with least aggresive first, but M105 is good stuff)

Some pictures would be handy for more of the pro's to chime in.

But...thats what I would do.....to my own car

You will have to fill the chip just above the surface.

wetsand with a small rubber pad using wetand paper at the most 1000 grit just over the chip area, then use 2500 grit. with uniform pressure over the chipped area.

The 110 will not finish it by itself.

If you have clear coat, i'd apply the top fill of the chip last over the color touchup. just make sure you put the color paint just below the surface first.

Important step is to allow each coat to dry before adding a second or third coat, two advantages- the paint will dry faster and lastly the solvent in the paint will be allowed to release, you can expect some paint settling with each coat.

I'd polish with M80 or then perhaps use finer cleaner glaze like 105 over the larger surface.

In short, you will need to wet sand the touched up area's to a smooth surface. Then you will need to use a rotary buffer to remove the sanding marks. The DA will not remove these sanding marks, especially with the Corvette paint......it is extremely hard!

Re: How do I treat touch up paint dabs with the g110?

We've had plenty of people come through our garage who have,

          added touch-up paint
          Let it dry
          sanded the area flat
Tried to buff out their sanding marks

          Here's what you see,

The sanding marks are removed out of touch-up paint
The clear coat surrounding the touch-up paint has sanding marks in it

The touch-up paint is soft compared to the clear coat so the sanding marks buff out fairly easily but because the clear coat is much harder, (in most cases), the sanding marks remain because DA Polishers are not powerful enough to remove the sanding marks effectively or completely by most people.

Can sanding marks be removed using a DA Polisher, sure if you know what you're doing and have access to the right products, but the average person doesn't have the ability to remove sanding marks with a DA Polisher.

If the touch up paint was applied poorly (as with most dealers before putting a car on the lot) it's likely that the G100/110 will **** the stuff right off on it's first pass....even with a mild 8006 pad and something as gentile as #80. Getting touch up paint to stick well is a pretty time comsuning process.....least for me it was after I sucked off the dealer applied paint

If your paint don't stick try-

cleaning the chip out with alcohol or a little paint thinner quickly.

Add a small tiny amount of enamel reducer if you have it. touch up paint is usually thick thick to flow.

Use a small tiny watercolor brush or model builders brush.

wet coats but not one big run. multiple coats are prefered.

                Thank you one and all.

I think Mike summed it up best as I do not have the skills required to use a Rotary polisher, not use clear, thinner and the rest of your suggestons. Not yet anyway. I don't need to put wet sanding scratches in my hard corvette clearcoat.

I will use the D/A and products recommended and hope for the best. Good to know the touch up paint may **** right out, so i will be careful.

                Thanks again.
