The staining you are kind of stuck with.... Thats why I use cheaper ones for dirtier areas.

As far as softness, I think some white vinegar in the wash helps..... I think it helped mine a bit.

In the rinse cycle I add a 1/4 cup of vinegar. When the cycle is complete I run the rinse cycle again to make sure the vinegar is completely rinsed out.

Thanks for the responses.. I've just started added vinegar the past few times i've washed and it has seemed to help a little.

        Any other tricks out there?

In addition to that, I dry mine on med/high heat. Seems to help fluff them a bit. They don't last forever unfortunately.

In addition to the vinegar rinse, I dry them and use dryer balls (as seen on TV) They're a rubber like ball with little spikes that really fluff up the fibrers. Supposed to make things dry faster as a bonus. They work really good on terry towels too.

Ive always used HOT water but last night I read on autopia that you shouldnt use hot water or dry them on high heat. The reason being is it shrinks the polyester fibers. Usually I wont use high heat in the dryer nor do I dry them 100% but Ive always used hot water. Not sure how much of that is correct but its something to think about.

post #13.. It was his second post so who knows. Ive always read to wash them in hot water.

I usually wash in cold and air dry. I have become accustomed to the stains but I may have to try the vinegar.

Some diluted APC 1:10 and soak it for a day.
A soft bristled brush to brush away the stained.

                      80% as good as new.

My towels are usally pretty dirty if "m doing a wipe down between washes, I spray the bad ones down with Spray&wash before I put them in the laundry. I have used Hot,Warm,&Cold wash cycles and really do not see much difference. With todays soap technolgy warm, or cool will work fine, what really helps keep the even cheaper Sams,Costco MF towels working is the vineager rinse.

The regular MF towels that do not have stains on them, I throw them in the washer with my underwear when the wife is not looking. With the stained ones, that I keep seperate from the non-stained ones, I soak them in a plastic pan in liquid laundry detergent and hot water for 2-3 hours. Wring them out and then spray Spray-n-Wash on the stains and scrub them lightly in the sink with a soft bristled brush. Rince in the sink 3-4 times with cold water and put them in the dryer on a warm or cool heat setting. The stains come right out! Geeeze, I sound like my wife!

I agree with the pre-soak ideas for heavily stained ones. I use the longer time cycle with warm water wash and two rinse cycles. You have to manually select this combination to get this setting.

I stopped using hot since some towels lost their shape a little and some of the colored ones (like Viking green towels) bled or faded. I had some white towels that are now yellowish green tint. People can get different results from hot water since the temperature is determined by the setting of the hot water heater. I have mine cranked up over the "average" (120 F setting).

I wash mine on heavy duty (15 minute wash), hot water, tide liquid and toss in vinegar when I feel that they aren't as soft as they should be. Tumble dry on delicate. Still have my first MF towel and it still works great. I have a couple that are stained but not too bad. I have my costco MF towels I use for wipe down of door jambs and whatnot.
