Clearcoat Failure on 2002 Dodge Stratus R/T

Hey all.. well as I stated in my intro message... Here is the picture of my clearcoat failure.. Apparently quite common with the 2001-2002 Black cars from mitsubishi and Dodge...


interestingly enough, gave mitsubishi a call yesterday, and they "acknowledged" that they had heard of the issue.. Called dodge, and the auto body tech told me I could just "buff" out the "oxidation" with a BC polisher or equivelent. And I didn't even get to physically talk to the AB tech.. the message was fed to me through a receptionist. To top it off, the dodge receptionist said they "hadn't heard of it before".

talk about sub-par customer service.

Anyway, on to the picture..sorry about the rant, this whole thing just is annoying. The car is only 6 years old (about to the letter..bought it august 22nd 2002).

sorry to hear about your problem, maybe you can give them another call and ask to talk to someone other than just a receptionist or some auto body tech that obviously does not have the knowledge he is suppose to have.

im sure if you reach the higher up people they would care more because dodge is probably getting pretty desperate for customers these days with their failing business due to high gas prices.

Agreed..I will definitely try to give them a call again. About the picture, it was from a cell phone, and shows up on my end, so I will try to post again in the near future.. I'm 100% certain it is clearcoat failure, as it mirrors some of the other pictures.

the same thing happened to me too it's sad coz its not a bad car , however i asked a dealer in my city and he said it's called acid rain or what ever it simply means the car was standing for a while and over the winter the salt messed it up i duno what to think about it ...anyways if someone got a solution please let me know !!!

We always hate to be the bearer of bad news but the only way to fix clear coat failure is to repaint the car or repaint the affected area.

There's nothing you can pour out of a bottle made by any company that you can spread around, wipe off and fix the problem.

hey guys... Bringing this post back from the dead, but got my car repainted. Wanted to post a "happy" ending to the clearcoat failure. Had it completely sanded down, and repainted. Have to say my paint dude did an excellent job!

Very cool! Glad you got it sorted out. Turned out looking great. Make sure not to wash it for at lease 2 weeks after repainting.
