I am a new person to the concept of paint care. I bought a 1991 Thunderbird Super Coupe with 300,000 kms (220,000 miles for those of you south of the border) on it.

The car is in good shape but the finish (White) is showing it's age and mileage.

I knew I needed to do something. I remembered that when I painted my '89 XR7 at my brother-in-laws and got a fine dusting of metallic blue paint on his black Lincoln he said no problem pulled out a clay bar and took the blue off quick as you please.

I lurked the forums and decided on a wash (no more dish soap for me!). A clay bar and a once over with Deep Crystal Paint cleaner.

The results so far are nothing short of amazing. The car is pretty large so it is a part at a time so it looks a little goofy right now. But each panel I get done is a huge improvement.

    Here is my problem now.

I have rust spots all over the car, even on the plastic bumpers. When my wife is rubbing on the deep crystal she doesn't have enough strength to get rid of them. I am more successful but even as hard as I can rub i can't get rid of all of them.

So, I have an 8" Orbital buffer, a craftsman model given to me by my father-in-law. Can i use it with the deep crystal to get all the spots out? Or should I be looking at a different product?

Also I would like to remove all the road grease and tar from the bottom skirts so I can shine them up like the rest of the car will be. What product is best for that?

I would post a before and afer pic but my camera battery was dead so I won't have a comparo pic until tomorrow.

And one last thing Mike was right in his posts about detailing a white car. While the initial results are dramatic it is very hard to spot incremental improvements. Both my wife and I are looking forward to freshening up the paint on her red tracker and experiencing even more of a wow factor!
