Re: Meguiar's Hot Rims Wheel Cleaner, or Gold Class?

    Pictures always help describe things...

At any rate, unless the wheel looks flat black, and shouldn't be black, because it is caked in brake dust, the safest and one of the best wheel cleaners is car soap and water. Doesn't hurt anything either. I can't remember the last time I actually used a wheel cleaner...

Ok, the damage isn't reversible it seems.

I took some Mothers (I don't have Meguiar's yet) metal polish on a toothbrush and put it through the wheel to the hub that looked funny colored, and then tried my best to wipe it off with a rag. Made it look consistent and normal again.

So, I just need to sometime take off all the wheels and get my hubs looking normal again. Just happy to know it's not ruined forever.

My calipers might have been slightly changed, but not too bad.

Just happy there was an answer to fix it, it appears, knock on wood.

I'll miss the All wheel cleaner though, it really is great at cleaning wheels with no labor.

I have a bottle of Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner I just bought a couple of weeks ago. I'm glad I ran across this thread before I used it on my wheels.

I wouldnt imagine it would hurt the calipers unless they are uncoated aluminum which is very possible. The calipers on our 06 Grand Cherokee are aluminum.

I personally have never seen the need for a rim cleaner unless your brakes produce tons of dust. All of our Jeeps have ceramic pads so thats not an issue.

Yeah, probably similar to some of the things I've seen. You could try using a metal polish on it someday like I tried.

I sure wish I had never used this cleaner either, but we have to learn!

                  You could wax them.

Maybe this is a dumb question.....

If you clean your wheels with car wash soap & water every time you wash your car do you need to use a dedicated wheel cleaner too? Soap & water on a regular basis seems to work fine.
I saw it on the Internet...it must be true!

I've read many others do the same as you, and I probably will do that from now on. It's safe and if they clean up nicely, no issue.

If you do it often, a car wash soap will often be fine on its own. Using a car wash soap would also save any wax that you may put on the wheels.

Sometimes I get to wash often, sometimes I dont, so I go with the Multi-Piece/Aluminum Wheel Wash, since it is the mildest of the dedicated wheel cleaners.

Just to note, the Gold Class Wheel Cleaner is mentioned in this thread is being discontinued.

Awww man thats dissapointing, I loved the gold class cleaner. It works wonders on my wheels and I knew it wouldn't harm my wheels and/or my calipers no matter what material it was made of. Guess Ill have to bulk buy it wherever I can find it before its too late LOL.

Since Mike's post was 2 years ago, you probably missed it all.

But I think the Hot Rims will be even better for you.
