  • I screwed up with polishing compound and need help BAD

OK, so I REALLY screwed up and used Turtle Wax polishing compound on my girlfriend's car, a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, red. It had some heavy marks on it from the road: bugs, bird crud, etc, so I thought it would be worth going with that. Instead, now I have HORRIBLE swirl marks. What product can I use and how to fix it? She doesn't seem to care but I am SO mad at myself and I don't know what to do. Please help.

      Hi. 1st calm down.

What tools do you have in your arsenal? Is the paint single stage or Clear coated?

If you are working with your hands, well few recent threads might aid to your case.

Some quick suggestion, maybe M105 - Ultra Cut Compound can help you on your problem. Apart from using it with a rotary buffer, its also great by hand.

      Here some links:

          OK, calming down.. haha

I was about to get the picture but it just started pouring-- will have to get that tomorrow if I can.

I used the white TurtleWax Polishing Compound by hand. Its Clear Coat paint. My "arsenal" consists of nothing more than my hands and some polishing cloths, at this point.

Is that M105 OK to use on such a new car? Seemed to be too heavy duty, especially considering that my genius idea of just a simple polishing compound turned out to be too much.

Of course, I know nothing, just checking

Megs Cleaner and follow the Polishing compound with cleaner & then with CleanerWax or just wax.

Should take out most of it. If you looking for perfect finish go with what guys are telling you to do above.

M105 will be fine, definately the way to go if working by hand.

105 seems to be the go-to product for serious scratches and swirls?

Yeah, it seems to be working a bit better than ScratcX, cant wait to try mine out.

While m105 should work, it's a lot of product to buy if you are not an avid detailer. If I were in your shoes I would pick up a tube of scratch X and try a few applications to see if it will correct the damage caused by the compound.

ADS had a 12oz sample for a reasonable price. I believe less than 10 dollars?

Re: I screwed up with polishing compound and need help BAD

It is always very important to use the least aggressive method possible. But, TW polishing compound is some seriously damaging stuff. I've seen the results first hand and it's horrific.

Try some M105 with a terry cloth first. If that works, great. You may need to follow it up with something a bit milder.

What is the difference between 105 and diamond cut or even heavy cut?

Yeh, I tried to do a test spot, and it looked fine after I had done it. Then I saw it under a streetlamp tonight and FLIPPED OUT-- as my previous post evidently indicated...

And I am certainly not an avid detailer. Would I be better off going to a local shop? A local place offers a full exterior for $100.

Worth just handing it off to a professional?

                              Hey,

                              Just to chime in...

We need to keep in mind that Meguiar's always suggests using the least aggressive product to do the job. Meg's M105 may be way more than what is needed. Also, M105 was designed originally to be used with a rotary and a wool pad, but later was acceptable for hand application.

Of the 3 products you mentioned only M105 can be used by rotary and by hand, the rest can not as they are rotary only products.

You would be wise to pick up a container of ScratchX. Using a piece of terry cloth toweling, work the ScratchX in with some real passion. That means work the product like crazy until it is very slight residue and then remove with a microfiber towel. Do this over a 18"x18" area. Then check your results after 2-3 applications if needed.

If this does not work, then we may need to step up to the more aggressive products.

Please keep us posted and not to worry, we will help you the best we can!
