  • Process Confusion

    I wanted to gain clarification on the following process since I have been told two totally different things.

    Should I apply the product to the pad then buff it into the paint then remove with microfiber or

    Should I apply the product with an applicator then buff out and use the microfiber for left overs?

    I have a PC 7424HD and use Lake County Pads

    You want to apply to the pad, work in the polish and break it down using the PC, then wipe away the residue with a high quality microfiber.

    If you are applying wax, you can use a finishing pad to apply the wax with your PC at speed 3. You can then use a cutting pad with a micro fiber bonnet to remove the wax at speed 5.

      DDS,

      Since you are using a random orbit machine it is best if you apply your product of choice to the pad, then put the machine onto the paint , turn it on and polish the paint section by section. Once the polish is broken down you could then remove with a micro fiber towel then move to the next section. By section I mean an area of about 18x18 overlapping each pass by 50% so you gain maximum defect removal. Hope this clears things up for you.

        So applying product to pad then pad to car then changing pad for same but with no product on it to remove product applied wouldn't work?

          You might like to look into the "How to Use the PC for Show Car Results" DVD...

          It shows putting the product on the pad in a bead around the edge, then using the pad to make 2 or 3 splotches in a small area... then going along and working in that small area, slowly at a time.

            If you want to use the pc to remove product you should use a 7006 pad with a micro fiber bonnet rapped over the pad. DO NOT use a clean dry pad and try to remove product with the pad you could risk instilling hazing/more swirl marks to your paint, which is counter productive to the whole paint polishing step to remove swirl marks in the finish in the first place. I recommend using a micro fiber towel or 100% cotton terry towels to remove cleaner polishes and a 7006 pad rapped with a micro fiber bonnet to remove your chioce of wax/sealant.

              The answer depends on what you mean by "product".
              1. When applying a wax or sealant, which you apply to the entire vehicle and allow to dry fully before removal, then the following process should be done:

                Apply product to pad then pad to car, adding additional wax or sealant as you go. Cover all the painted surfaces of the vehicle and allow to fully dry. If you so desire you can now switch to a W7006 cutting pad and put a microfiber bonnet over it to remove the wax/sealant. Optionally you can just remove by hand with a microfiber towel. If you applied the wax/sealant in a nice thin coat, which is very easy to do with machine application, then removal by hand is very easy.

              2. When applying a paint cleaner, cleaner polish, or pure polish which you only apply to small sections at a time and remove before they dry, then the following process should be done:

                Apply product to pad then pad to car, then work a roughly 2' x 2' section until the product has fully broken down (paint cleaner/cleaner polish) or until you've covered each square inch of this small work area 3 or 4 times (pure polish). Turn the machine off and lift it off the paint. Now wipe off the excess product/residue by hand using a microfiber towel. Repeat machine application step on next section, wipe off by hand. Continue this process for entire vehicle. Since you will be doing many of these 2' x 2' sections to complete a vehicle you can see how it would be terribly inconvenient to constantly be swapping pads. Not to mention that even a W7006 pad with a microfiber bonnet would quickly be loaded up with paint cleaner/polish and basically rendered useless for continued removal of same.
